Dear Mr Gilmore

TfL Ref: FO-0621-14115

Thank you for your email which we received on 15 July 2014 asking for
information about water disposal. Please accept my apologies for the delay
in replying.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our information access
policy.  I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You
asked for:

1. How much infiltration water is pumped by London Underground into the
combined sewers of Inner London per year. Please note that although flow
meters may not be installed at pump locations, volumes can be assessed
from pump running times.

The route of water ingress and flow into London Underground premises
varies and it is not all from infiltration, for example on sub-surface
lines there are many direct connections bring water from private and water
company sewers.  The water is discharged from London Underground either in
direct connection with combined sewers, pumping stations, connections to
watercourses or using sustainable drainage techniques such as
soakaways.  Most of the discharges are not directly measured.

Critical pumping sites are monitored and provide a rough estimate of the
discharges, in the last year this is approximately 1448000 metres
cubed.  There are a number of smaller non critical pump sites on the
London Underground system that are not monitored, but the volumes from
these are negligible.

2. How much does TfL/LUL pay Thames Water Utilities Limited to dispose of
this water.

We do not hold this information as each of the London Underground lines
were constructed using various Acts of Parliament and these gave rights to
discharge.  Hence, payment to the various water companies London
Underground intersects with is zero.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
