Dear Canterbury City Council,

The below is for a newspaper article regarding the lowest paid employees at Councils within the South east of the UK. This is likely to be published later this year.

Please answer the following:

What is the councils lowest pay grade and what is the starting figure of this grade.

How many of your full time (not zero hour) employees are not on the councils “grade” pay system. What is their exact pay and role. This does not include directors or the chief executive. Please give the yearly amount they are paid before tax and their role.

Who is your lowest paid officer in the council and what is/ are their role/s. Please also give their job title.

How many employees are on the national minimum wage at the council and what are their roles within the Council.

In the past 5 years have the council paid any full time employee under £10,000 a year (before tax).

If for any reason parts or all of the above can not be answered please give a reason why the part or parts of the request can not be answered and please give a response to the rest of the request.

Title: Staff Pay Grades

Question 1

What is the council's lowest pay grade and what is the starting figure of
this grade.

Our response:

The lowest pay grade is CCC-06 and the current starting figure is
£17,942.00

Question 2

How many of your full time (not zero hour) employees are not on the
councils “grade” pay system? What is their exact pay and role? This does
not include directors or the chief executive. Please give the yearly
amount they are paid before tax and their role.

Our response:

None.  The only employees who are not on the Council's pay grade system
are apprentices. They are paid in accordance with the apprenticeship rates
and national minimum wage for their age.

Question 3

Who is your lowest paid officer in the council and what is/ are their
role/s? Please also give their job title.

Our response:

With the exception of the apprentices mentioned above all other posts are
within the Canterbury Pay Grades and therefore there are a number of posts
which fall within the lowest grade CCC-06.  There are currently 71 staff
in these posts in the following roles;

* Cafe and Retail Assistant

* Facilities Assistant

* Facilities Assistant (Casual)

* Steward

* Steward (Higher Rate)

* Front of House Support Officer

* Coastal Survey & Engineering Assistant

* Trainee Engineering Technician

* Beach Lifeguard

Question 4

How many employees are on the national minimum wage at the council and
what are their roles within the Council?

Our response:

There is one apprentice who is being paid at the National Minimum Wage
according to their age.

Question 5

In the past 5 years have the council paid any full time employee under
£10,000 a year (before tax)?

Our response:

No
