London Underground Tube Data

The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

I am an undergraduate, looking to research more into the London Underground.

Are you able to answer these questions below:
1. Do older tube trains keep load data?
2. PID Displays on platforms – how much do they cost to implement?
3. On what trains does load weigh data exist?
- Can we access this data?
- Could the data be transferred from the train in real time?
- Could a third party do this?
4. What data do you already monitor on tube trains?
- Can this be accessed?
5. How is the load weigh data on the Open Data store collected?

Yours faithfully,

Nicole

Dear Ms Cox

TfL Ref: 1257-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29
August 2017 asking for information about London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can
confirm that we hold some of the information you require.  Your request
and our response is as follows:

1.Do older tube trains keep load data?

No

2.PID Displays on platforms – how much do they cost to implement?

Based on a recent project, the cost of installing Visual Information
Displays on a station with 2 platforms (One on each platform) is
approximately £50k. In arriving at this estimate we are making the
following assumptions:

1.    There is an existing signalling data source available. If not,
signalling design works are required which will increase the costs.

2.    No two stations are the same so the figure above is an average and
will vary dependent upon cable runs / awkward cable routes.

3.    Costs include contractor prelims, design, fabrication, installation
and commissioning but do not include internal on-costs.

4.    Costs above do not include risk

5.    For a site with one platform it would not make sense to simply halve
the above cost. It would likely be in the region of £35k to £40k.

6.    Any requirement for ticket hall displays would be in addition to the
above.

3.On what trains does load weigh data exist?

- Can we access this data?

- Could the data be transferred from the train in real time?

- Could a third party do this?

Load weigh data exists on our 92TS, 95TS , 09TS and S stock.

The data for the 92TS, 95TS and 09TS trains is sent via the signalling
system. S Stock data is downloaded as part of maintenance information. The
train maintainers access the data it if they need to once the trains have
returned to depots. This data is currently not accessible outside the
maintenance organisation.

The data cannot be downloaded real time as there is no real time data
link.  However 92TS, 95TS and 09TS do transmit this data at every station
stop, but currently it has high failure rate as the train is not in
station long enough to download all the data.

A third party cannot download the data as the trains are configured only
to transmit via secure data links.

4.What data do you already monitor on tube trains?

- Can this be accessed?

We monitor most systems on modern trains for performance and maintenance
purposes and I would like to apologise for not seeking clarification on
what type of data you are particularly interested in accessing before
replying to your information request.   However we are currently carrying
out a consultation exercise to seek the views of our stakeholders to
establish what else we could do to improve our transparency and to find
out what other data our stakeholders would like to access and the format
they would prefer to receive the data in. We would be grateful if you
could consider completing our online transparency survey to indicate what
type of information you would be interested in accessing using the
following link: [1]https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/policy/....

5.How is the load weigh data on the Open Data store collected?

We do not make any train load weigh data public on our Open Data store.
However, Rolling Origin and Destination Survey (RODS) passenger data which
is under the header ‘Network Statistics’ on our web pages  has estimated
train loading information, but it is not derived from train loadweigh
data. You can access this using the following link:
[2]https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/open-data-us...

Additionally, on our [3]http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/ pages, the
StationPassengerLinkFlows.csv is a translation of the RODS station flow
file and the LUTrainLoadingData.csv is derived from RODS station flow,
train frequency and train capacity. The files are produced in June 2017,
but data is from RODS 2016.  We produce RODS data once a year, and these
files on crowding.data.tfl are refreshed when RODS is available.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
