London bus routes converting to zero-emission EV buses

The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

I've got questions about the zero-emission electric bus rollout for London.

1. What are the upcoming routes converting to electric buses?

2. Can you list the manufacturer, model and type of the electric buses used for the upcoming routes?

3. Can you provide the dates of the routes due for conversion to electric buses?

4. Do TfL select the electric buses for bus operators to operate for their new route contracts?

5. Do TfL directly fund charging ports for bus operators to install in their bus garages?

6. Do TfL plan to make it compulsory for bus operators to purchase electric buses?

7. What is the purpose of the electric bus project?

Yours sincerely
Paul Jones

Dear Mr Ekanem

TfL Ref: FOI-3224-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 21
January 2020 asking for information about zero-emission electric buses.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. You
asked:

1. What are the upcoming routes converting to electric buses?

2. Can you list the manufacturer, model and type of the electric buses
used for the upcoming routes?

3. Can you provide the dates of the routes due for conversion to electric
buses?

The next confirmed routes to go electric are shown below, with the makes
and models against them. The date of routes intended for conversion are
earliest indicative dates for the operation to commence; but the actual
dates can be subject to change due to vehicle and infrastructure delivery
timescales.

4. Do TfL select the electric buses for bus operators to operate for their
new route contracts?

No, the operators select the makes and models from the open market. TfL
requires them to meet minimum generic standards for London such as being
fitted with CCTV, heating and new safety equipment.

5. Do TfL directly fund charging ports for bus operators to install in
their bus garages?

No, but our private operators factor in all the costs associated with
operating vehicles including their garage support when they bid for route
contracts. The costs are covered this way. Operators choose whether to
lease or buy vehicles, and how to reshape their garages for the future.

6. Do TfL plan to make it compulsory for bus operators to purchase
electric buses?

We require cleaner vehicles to enter the fleet now such as hybrid
diesel-electric vehicles and electric vehicles, and have targets to reach
2,000 electric buses by 2025. One reason we haven’t set a target for only
electric buses to enter the fleet now is because the battery range is
still quite limited and the buses are much more expensive. We hope these
differences will reduce in the next few years as battery technology
improves and more manufacturers enter the market.

7. What is the purpose of the electric bus project?

The purpose of the electric bus project is to understand the most economic
way to move to electrification of the bus network, helping us reach 2,000
electric buses by 2025 and becoming a zero emission bus fleet by 2037.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal.

Yours sincerely,
