Locked Fire Doors

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, University of Brighton should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear University of Brighton,
I understand that your facilities department chose to open Falmer campus without having unlocked building fire doors yesterday, 27th February.

I also understandfrom the union that this has been reported as a health and safety incident because one of the buildings, The Checkland Building, was unsafe as a result.

Can you give details of what action has been taken as a result of the risk that students and staff were placed in and what actions will be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Steven

FOI, University of Brighton

Dear Steve

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act Request.

I can confirm that colleagues are looking into this incident and will be looking at proceedures and actions once the investigation is complete. We anticipate that it will take a further few weeks to conclude this issue, so we would advise you get back in touch in approxiamately 3 weeks - either via an FOI request or if you prefer direct to the Health and Safety department - [email address].

In the meantime, it would be particularly useful if you could complete a fire incident report with any details you have about this https://staff.brighton.ac.uk/safety/Publ...

Should you wish to seek a review of this response to your request, please write to Mr S Dudderidge, Registrar and Secretary, Mithras House, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4AT. If this fails to resolve the matter then you have the right to apply to the Information Commissioner for a decision.

Yours sincerely

Rachel

Dear FOI,

As stated I understand that a colleague has filed a report to health and safety covering locked fire doors as well as the dangerous state of the campus, a lack of premises staff and a failure of prioritisation on the part of University management.
The health and safety report was filed in the same week as the incident. It is beyond reasonable that you still have not concluded a report into what amounted to having a building that was not fire safe at the time of the incident.
I understand from my Health and Safety Representative that this is not the first time that the recent leaving locked and early locking of fire doors on Falmer Campus has been raised.
What is surprising is that you have so far failed to interview any of my colleagues who have reported these failures. This suggests to me that you may be trying to sweep the issue under the carpet without taking firm action.
I do hope not. However, rest assured that if your report is a whitewash I will send the complaints to the HSE and local Fire Service for their action.

Yours sincerely,

Steven

Dear Steven
Thank you for your email, I can confirm that I have sent this to Health and Safety, who I know are working with Estates on this.
