Locations of new docking points in southern expansion of Barclays Cycle Hire

The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

Could you please provide in CSV format a list of the locations of new docking stations proposed for the southern extension of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme. If the following information is available about each station could you please also include it:

1) latitude and longitude
2) location status if not confirmed; e.g. waiting for confirmation from local authority, subject to dispute, etc.

If there is a map (preferably in PDF) of the new stations that would also be gratefully received.

Yours faithfully,

H. Esquire

Dear H. Esquire

TfL Ref: FOI-0977-1213

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18
September 2012 asking for information about proposed docking points for
the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and TfL’s information access policy. I can
confirm TfL holds some of the information you require. You asked for:

Could you please provide in CSV format a list of the locations of new
docking stations proposed for the southern extension of the Barclays Cycle
Hire scheme. If the following information is available about each station
could you please also include it:

     1) Latitude and longitude

     2) Location status if not confirmed; e.g. waiting for confirmation
from local authority, subject to dispute, etc.

Please find attached map for the next phase of the Cycle Hire Expansion
and Intensification (CHEI). We do not hold longitude / latitude
coordinates but we do hold the a list of Eastings/Northings (attached)
from which you can convert this information to find the format you
request.

Please note these are only proposals at this stage.  TfL’s original
investigations, which started with suggestions from members of the public,
identified around 200 potential sites for docking stations.  Of these,
around 100 have already been discounted by TfL, the police, local
councillors, and/or borough officers for varying reasons including:

·         Sites located in areas of existing high parking stress.

·         High footfall / insufficient remaining footway for local usage.

·         Proposals on private land refused by the landowners.

·         Security / safety concerns about the area raised by police.

·         Located too close to trees.

·         Operationally unfeasible for maintenance and servicing.

·         Traffic volumes or specific traffic movements (rubbish
collection vehicles, buses, etc.) would jeopardise users’ safety.

The proposed docking station sites shown on the map represent sites that
have met certain basic criteria for the scheme, namely minimum length /
width, obvious utilities, general situation, etc.  Subject to feedback
from recent informal consultations and following the results of the
current public consultations, TfL will formally survey (including radar
survey) and design the proposed sites.

During this process sites will be assessed against other technical
criteria such as having sufficient depth for foundations, electrical
supply availability, and being clear of underground utilities and
structures such as cellars and basements.  Some proposed stations will
inevitably be lost during this process as underground obstructions etc are
discovered which would prevent construction of a docking station on the
site.  Once the remaining sites are surveyed and designed, planning
applications will be made and traffic regulation orders advertised for the
proposed docking stations, at which point sites may also be rejected.

We have had drop in sessions to informally engage with the public in the
intended boroughs and there will be further formal consultation organised
by the boroughs with residents and the general public following site
submission for planning approval.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

I've converted the eastings and northings to latitude and longitude (using the Perl module Geo::Coordinates::OSGB) and put the results into a CSV file, which can be downloaded here:

I've now finally gotten around to putting this data into KML format, suitable for importing into Google Maps.

I've plotted these points on a map here: http://flaneur.apphb.com/Sandbox/CycleHi...
