Location maps of old features of Kielder valley

The request was refused by Forestry Commission.

Dear Forestry Commission,

I have been asked to create a map of Kielder Reservoir, showing the reservoir and what lay beneath it at various locations, for the benefit of disabled sailors who may be interested in what they are passing over or what was historically at locations they are sailing over.

Key points of interest would be the railway line and Kielder Forest and Plashetts stations, Plashetts miners' hamlet and its amenities, roads, coal workings, farmsteads and any other previous geographical features or areas. It would be good to be able to spot such features where they are still visible on the coastline, e.g. remnants of the railway line, roads emerging from the water, etc.

Of particular interest would be the stretch of coastline from Matthews Lynn to Wickhope anchorage, including Leaplish and Bull Crag, though the whole reservoir it's of interest.

Do you have such a map please, or if not an old map with contours on or similar so that I may add the reservoir in, as it were?

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

Doug Paulley

Dear Barker, Richard,

Thank you,

That answers the second bit of my enquiry but not the first. I was asking if you have a map that shows the current reservoir and what was originally there. I'm not aware of any commercially available map that shows this. So please advise whether you have such a map, as requested.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Doug Paulley

Barker, Richard,

Dear Doug Paulley

Thank you for your e-mail below. Whether or not we hold a map is immaterial when the information you are seeking (the location of various features on the land area that is now occupied by Kielder Water) is readily available by another means. That is why the Section 21 exemption was applied.

Historic maps are available from at least two publishers and from a number of suppliers, but I am unable to make any recommendation as to which you should buy. A search on the internet should enable you to find this information.

Yours sincerely

Richard Barker
