Local Authority Electricity Generation Assets

The request was successful.

Dear Kirklees Borough Council,

In order to assist my research into Local Authorities who generate and export electricity from their own energy assets I would be grateful if you could answer the following questions. I am particularly looking at grid connected assets for example solar farms, wind turbines and waste to energy plants, rather than rooftop solar installations which mostly supply electricity to the building they occupy. I’d be grateful if you could answer the following questions: -

1) Do you own or operate electricity generation assets which export to the grid?
2) If so, what technologies? And are they ‘co-located’? E.g., a solar farm with a battery.
3) How much electricity (in kWh) would you expect to be exported, per asset, per year?
4) When were the assets commissioned?
5) What is the current contractual arrangement to sell the power, to whom is it sold and what is the contract end date?
6) Does your local authority have any plans in place to acquire, build or invest in electricity generation assets in the future?

Many thanks,

Rebecca Brown

Dear Rebecca Brown

30952 Freedom of Information request - Local Authority Electricity
Generation Assets

I am writing in response to your request dated 09/02/2023.  This has been
dealt with under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

You asked for the following information and the Council's response to your
specific questions is set out below:

In order to assist my research into Local Authorities who generate and
export electricity from their own energy assets I would be grateful if you
could answer the following questions. I am particularly looking at grid
connected assets for example solar farms, wind turbines and waste to
energy plants, rather than rooftop solar installations which mostly supply
electricity to the building they occupy. I’d be grateful if you could
answer the following questions: -

Response typed in blue

1)           Do you own or operate electricity generation assets which
export to the grid?

No, the Council currently does not directly own or operate electricity
generation assets which export to the grid. There is an Energy from Waste
facility that is managed by a third party contractor and the Council
currently does not directly benefit from or consume any of the electricity
generated.

2)           If so, what technologies? And are they ‘co-located’? E.g., a
solar farm with a battery.

              Not applicable

3)           How much electricity (in kWh) would you expect to be
exported, per asset, per year?

              Not applicable

4)           When were the assets commissioned?

              Not applicable

5)           What is the current contractual arrangement to sell the
power, to whom is it sold and what is the contract end date?

              Not applicable

6)           Does your local authority have any plans in place to acquire,
build or invest in electricity generation assets in the future

The Council currently doesn’t have any specific plans to acquire, build or
invest in electricity generation assets for the purpose of
exporting/selling electricity to the grid. However there are actions in
the Council’s Climate Change Action Plan which could deliver renewable
electricity generation within the scope of this request in future. The
Action Plan can be found online, at the following link:
