The request was successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Currently Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) is paid as a benefit.
"From 6 April 2018 it will be paid as a loan"
https://www.gov.uk/support-for-mortgage-...

As of today how many SMI benefit recipients have taken up the loan or made a loan application?

57,000 of SMI recipients are pensioners, how many of these pensioners have taken up the loan or made a loan application?

Please disclose a copy of the letters/information posted to SMI benefit recipients advising them that SMI is becoming a loan and how they can apply.

Yours faithfully,

Frank Zola

Recent judicial review concerning LMI:

"57. The EIA [Equality Impact Assessment] noted that currently almost half of SMI recipients (52%) were pensioners, many of whom had received support for between 20 and 30 years, as they had chosen to take interest only mortgages which continued for their whole life. It pointed out that the cost of SMI to the Exchequer was sensitive to increases in mortgage interest rates. It stressed that converting SMI to a loan would make no difference to the availability of money for those who needed support with their mortgage. It would not involve any recipient losing income at the point of claim. All current SMI customers would be affected equally."
