Dear Mr Hemingway,
Thank you for submitting an FOI request, requesting information from the University of Warwick.
Please note from its preliminary assessment, in its current format your FOI request would be likely to exceed the appropriate costs limit under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The University does not use predicted grades for postgraduate applicants in the same way as for undergraduate admissions. At the point they apply, applicants are able to provide an expected grade with some qualification information but we refer to their transcripts to see their academic progress overall/in specific modules at undergraduate level. Therefore, their expected grade does not form part of the assessment about their suitability for their chosen programme of study. The expected grades for PG applicants are not held in our student records system, and we only record achieved grades. We would hold some information provided by applicants at the point they submitted their application, but as this information is not extractable, the University will need to check each individual record to see what information they had provided. There were 501 applicants for PGT law programmes in 2018/19 alone, and we estimate that to check each individual application for this information would exceed the cost limit under the FOI Act.
Furthermore, the University does not record percentage grades. We could provide data from our student records system on the grades achieved for the last three academic years, but note that this would only show whether an applicant achieved a First/2.1 overall. If this information is of interest to you, please submit a refined request. To provide you with further detail would require us to go back to the application for each individual applicant and calculate the average from the transcript, which would take us over the 18 hours of staff time.
If you do submit a refined request, the University will treat it as a substitute request to your original request below. In the absence of a refined request, the University will send an official response to your original request, engaging the costs limit exemption under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Kind Regards,
Information and Data Compliance Team
Dear Mr Hemingway,
Thank you for your email dated 23^rd December 2018 requesting information
from the University of Warwick. Your request is being considered under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. Please find below your request and our
response.
Across all your LLM programmes, for the three most recent academic years,
I would like to request the following data on applicants who have studied
their undergraduate degrees at UK universities only:
1)
i) a) Number of people applying with a predicted 1st and b) Number of
these people given an offer
ii) a) Number of people applying with an achieved 1st and b) Number of
these people given an offer
2)
i) a) Number of people applying with a predicted very high 2:1 (overall
67%+) and b) Number of these people given an offer
ii) a) Number of people applying with a predicted very high 2:1 (overall
67%+) and b) Number of these people given an offer
3)
i) a) Number of people applying with a predicted a mid 2:1 (overall
64-66%+) and b) Number of these people given an offer
ii) Number of people applying with a predicted a high 2:1 (overall
64-66%+) and b) Number of these people given an offer
4)
i) Number of people applying with a predicted a low 2:1 (less than overall
64%) and b) Number of these people given an offer
ii) Number of people applying with a predicted a low 2:1 (less than
overall 64%) and b) Number of these people given an offer
5) According to the applicant's achieved undergraduate overall percentage
rather than predictions,
i) The number of people with firsts enrolling
ii) The number of people with very high 2:1s enrolling
iii) The number of people with high 2:1s enrolling
iv) The number of people with mid 2:1s enrolling
v) The number of people with low 2:1 enrolling
The University has communicated with you regarding your request (email
dated 23^rd January 2019), advising that from its preliminary assessment,
in its current format your FOI request would be likely to exceed the
appropriate costs limit under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information
Act 2000. As explained, the University does not use predicted grades for
postgraduate applicants in the same way as for undergraduate admissions.
At the point they apply, applicants are able to provide an expected grade
with some qualification information but where available we will always
refer to their transcripts to see their academic progress overall/in
specific modules at undergraduate level. The expected grades for PG
applicants are not held in our student records system, and we only record
achieved grades. We would hold some information provided by applicants at
the point they submitted their application, but as this information is not
extractable, the University will need to check each individual record to
see what information they had provided. There were 501 applicants for PGT
law programmes in 2018/19 alone, and we estimate that to check each
individual application for this information would exceed the cost limit
under the FOI Act. Furthermore, the University does not record percentage
grades for applicants who have studied degrees using the UK classification
system.
Due to the reasons outlined above and in our previous email, dated 23^rd
January 2019, the University estimates that it would exceed the cost limit
allowed under the Freedom of Information Act to provide you with the
information requested. This is currently £450, which equates to 18 hours
of staff time calculated at £25 an hour as set out in the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations
2004.
The University offered guidance as to what would be manageable under the
cost limit, noting that it may be able to provide data from our student
records system on the grades achieved for the last three academic years,
but note that this would only show whether an applicant achieved a
First/2.1 overall.
As the University has not received any communication containing a refined
request, which would not exceed the appropriate costs limit, the exemption
under Section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act is engaged.
If you are dissatisfied with the way in which your request has been
handled you can request an internal review within one month of our
response and, in the first instance, you are advised to follow the
