FOI 2017/F34
Dear Mr. Hemingway,
Thank you for your email of 30^th January.
I am afraid that your request is refused under s.12 of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000. The way we hold predicted grades is not particularly
structured and it is difficult for us to group applicants by predicted (or
achieved) grades without a manual review. Even for one year, we estimate
that to do this would exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the
Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit) Regulations
2004. For your information this is £450, calculated as the estimated cost
of one person spending 18 hours in determining whether the information is
held, then locating, retrieving and extracting the information. Section 12
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 therefore makes provision for
public authorities to refuse such requests.
We were able to provide some data for a previous similar request (please
see
[1]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/a...)
but this is really the extent of what we are able to do within the cost
limit.
You may find that UCAS is able to provide more information to you. We can
also confirm that the typical A-level offer for all specified years of
entry was A*AA.
If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask QMUL to conduct a
review of this decision. To do this, please contact the College in
writing (including by fax, letter or email), describe the original
request, explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include an address
for correspondence. You have 40 working days from receipt of this
communication to submit a review request. When the review process has
been completed, if you are still dissatisfied, you may ask the Information
Commissioner to intervene. Please see [2]www.ico.org.uk for details.
Yours sincerely

Dear Queen Mary, University of London FOI,
If I abridged the request to the most recent academic year, would it be workable then? If not, what if I abridged the request to question 2 only for the most recent academic year only?
If the answer to this is yes to either parts, then I would consider either satisfactory.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Hemingway
Dear Mr. Hemingway,
As stated in our response, I'm afraid that our estimate is that even one year would exceed the appropriate limit. However, we did direct you to alternative sources that could provide some of the data you seek.

Dear QM FOI Enquiries,
To clarify, my question was twofold. One part was about abridging the request to one year. The second part was about abridging the request to question 2 (i.e. achieved A-Level grades on enrolment). I do not think your recent reply deals with the second part, although I could be mistaken.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Hemingway
Dear Mr. Hemingway,
Thank you for your further email. We do not store information based on
each applicant’s 3 best A-Levels. Therefore, we still cannot provide
exactly the data you have requested without exceeding the appropriate
limit as a lot of manual sifting to categorise each applicant would be
required.
Below is some information from 2016/17 and 2015/16 entry based on statuses
we have used when confirming an applicant’s offer. This gives an
indication of achievement against offer rather than the specific grades
that applicants have achieved.

Notes:
· The typical A-Level offer for 2016/17 and 2015/16 was A*AA for
M100. However, the status against offer conditions indicates the status
against an applicant’s individual conditions rather than the typical
offer.
· An applicant with an offer of A*AA who achieved AAA would be
recorded as ‘Dropped 1 grade’ whereas an applicant with an offer of AAA
who achieved AAA is recorded as ‘Met’.
· Dropped grades can be in one or more subjects, so against an
offer of A*AA, ‘Dropped 2 grades’ could include students with A*AC or AAB
· An applicant whose record is prepared for enrolment does not
necessarily complete formal registration processes.
I hope that you find this useful.
Yours sincerely
