Live Birth Certificate

The request was partially successful.

Dear General Register Office,
I have been told that there are two types of birth certificate. One being given to the parents upon registration of child. "Birth Certificate". And the second being a certificate of Live birth I.e Stating that new born is a living human being. Can you confirm this to be factual.

Yours faithfully,

Lee Sullivan

Dear General Register Office,

GROLRS Engagement,

Dear Mr Sullivan,

Thank you for your email of 17 April. Your enquiry has been handled as
official correspondence rather than as a request for information under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 although this does not mean that your
enquiry has been actioned any differently or that the information provided
contains any less content or detail.

You requested the following information and I have provided a response
below.

I have been told that there are two types of birth certificate. One being
given to the parents upon registration of child. "Birth Certificate". And
the second being a certificate of Live birth, i.e. Stating that new born
is a living human being. Can you confirm this to be factual.

The General Register Office (GRO) - and the local registration service –
only deal with the registration of births and the keeping of those
registrations (and issuing certified copies of those records). Birth
certificates issued by the GRO reflect the information recorded in the
birth register following the registration of the birth.

I understand that there is also documentation produced to notify the
health authorities once a birth has taken place, which is provided by a
notification of the birth to the local health authority by e.g. the doctor
or midwife who attended the birth. I think practice has varied over the
years as to exactly in what form such notifications were made, and I do
not know whether health authorities retain these.

I hope this helps clarify birth registration practice.

With regards to the delay in responding, I have checked our records and
unfortunately we did not receive your original request. However, I did
manage to locate the earlier request of 11 March via
[1]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/l....

I have investigated this issue further and it is possible that this could
have happened because the route you have opted to use to submit your
enquiry is directing emails to an incorrect email address / inbox.

To prevent a delay re-occurring, please ensure that all Freedom of
Information requests for the General Register Office or to Her Majesty's
Passport Office (HMPO) are sent to: [email address] . The General Register
Office (GRO) became part of HMPO on 1 April 2008. Full details on how to
contact us can be found on the website via the following link -
