ECS, Conwy County Borough Council

Dear Mrs F. McGinty,

Please see the answers below as requested:

2) Which of the listed facilities that advertise 'women only' or 'ladies
only' (or similarly described) swimming sessions, provide an environment
that is exclusively single sex, i.e., for females only, and which
facilities provide a session that is mixed sex, i.e., do not exclude males
who identify as a woman?

The following centres currently provide Ladies only sessions; Abergele,
Llandudno and Llanrwst. Details of the changing facilities are below:

Leisure Facility Changing Facilities
Abergele Leisure Centre Village changing areas; a mixed group changing
area for male and female. There are open showers
on poolside and cubicles in the shower / toilet
area with an additional accessible changing
room.
Llandudno Swimming Centre Village changing areas; a mixed group changing
area for male and female. There are open showers
in the village area and cubicles, with an
additional accessible changing room.
Llanrwst Leisure Centre Single sex changing areas; but all cubicles for
changing with open plan for showers.

3) Please send me a copy of the council policy or policies that cover the
provision of 'women only' or 'ladies only' (or similarly described)
swimming sessions.

Whilst we have no specific policy around ladies only swimming sessions we
have made positive actions to help address areas of inequality. The Ladies
only sessions align with Sport Wales’ Equality Actions which reference
being person centred and supporting priority groups such as women and
girls. Actif North Wales 10 year strategy (2023-2033) also references
gender identity and addressing inequality. There are National Survey for
Wales statistics that state physical activity rates are lower for women
and the Wales Activity Tracker (survey 4) states that women (18%) are more
likely than their counterparts to report no physical activity.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within two months of the date of receipt of this response and
