List of all 'Editorial Information' notes to legislation

National Archives did not have the information requested.

Dear National Archives,

Please provide me with a list of all the 'Editorial Information' notes to legislation used on legislation.gov.uk.

For example, there is a note for the Great Seal Act 1688 which states that "Abbreviations or contractions in the original form of this Act have been expanded into modern lettering in the text set out above and below."

By way of a further example, "Interlined on the Roll." appears in the notes to a number of acts including the Exchequer Court (Scotland) Act 1707.

Some notes are common to multiple acts/instruments, in those cases I would only want the note to appear once in the list.

If a full list is not available, please provide as many entries as possible.

Thank you,

Mr Cross

Dear Mr Cross

Thank you for contacting our FOI team, who have forwarded this request to
the legislation services inbox (copied in) to progress as a business as
usual enquiry (given that the information you require is already in the
public domain).

The annotations we use when revising legislation are explained in the help
text provided on our website: [1]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help as
follows:

Q. What are annotations?

A. Annotations are notes that appear at the foot of a piece of legislative
text on legislation.gov.uk. They are mainly used to provide the authority
for amendments or other effects on the legislation, but they may also be
used to convey other editorial information.

Each annotation has a reference number and the nature of the information
it contains is conveyed by the annotation type. For instance, F-notes
identify amendments where there is authority to change the text, and
I-notes contain information about the coming into force of a provision.
The meaning of the different notes are explained in the glossary we
provide: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help#glos...

For further details, see the Guide to Revised Legislation on
legislation.gov.uk
([2]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/pdfs/Guid...).
Although some of the information in this guide is in the process of being
updated, it provides some useful background and context.

I hope this provides the information you require, but please don’t
hesitate to get in touch if we can help you further.

With best wishes,

Judith

Legislation, National Archives

Thank you for your email. We aim to respond to your query within 10
working days, sooner if we can.

In the meantime, you might find it useful to note that our function is to
oversee the publication of legislation, as enacted or made, and as
revised. We are happy to help if you have questions about how legislation
has been published, about our editorial policy, or about the use or reuse
of legislation data. However, we do not draft legislation and cannot
advise on legislative or administrative matters. This means that we cannot
assist you with legal research, or help you to interpret the law.

You might find it useful to look at our ‘help’ page
([1]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help), which addresses a host of
frequently asked questions, such as:

• Where do I get help understanding a particular legislation item or
area of legislation?
([2]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help#part...)
•  How can I access legislation that isn’t available on
legislation.gov.uk?
([3]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help#abou...)
• How do I get advice about a legal problem?
([4]https://www.legislation.gov.uk/help#unde...

If you are asking for further information on a particular piece of
legislation or area of legislation, you should contact the government
department responsible for the legislation. You can find government
department details on [5]https://www.gov.uk/government/organisati....

[6]www.gov.uk also has a wealth of information on a variety of subjects
which may assist you with your query, as may your local council website.
You can find local council contact details
from [7]https://www.gov.uk/find-your-local-counc...

When you email the legislation inbox, any personal information you send to
us will be handled in accordance with our [8]privacy policy.

Legislation, National Archives

Dear Mr Cross

I'm glad that the information provided is helpful to you. I'm afraid we're not really in the position to provide the list that you're requesting, as no such list exists as a standalone artefact. We are not withholding information under FOI - the editorial information annotations are already publically available via the website, but does not exist in a collated list. There would be a substantial amount of work to generate such a list for you, which we are not currently resourced to carry out. It is also worth saying that such a list would be huge, as while the annotations generally follow a standard form as described in the Guide to Revised Legislation, they are also tailored to the individual legislation or amendment that they relate to.

I'm sorry that we're not in a position to give you the information you seek in the format requested. If you could let us know the purpose to which you are looking to put this information it may be possible to give you alternative information that would still be helpful (eg providing useful examples), but this particular request is not something we are able to fulfil at the moment.

Regards
