Dear Information Compliance,
I apologise for the late reply - I failed to receive a notification for your message. In regards to your query, when referring to students who "achieved an aspirational offer," I meant students who were offered admission to a university program (in this case, life sciences courses and Biomedical Engineering) despite having grades one grade below the standard entry requirements. For example, a student predicted AAB applying for the neuroscience course with entry requirements AAA.
Yours sincerely,
Sia

Dear Sia Bhasin,
Request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the
Act”)
Further to your recent request for information held by King’s College
London, I am writing to confirm that the requested information is held in
part by the university.
Your request
We received your information request on 18^th December 2023 and have
treated it as a request for information made under section 1(1) of the
Act.
You requested the following information:
Life sciences and engineering data for years 2020-2023

2023:

We have given careful consideration to your request and have determined
that the cost of complying would exceed the appropriate limit set out in
The [1]Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and
Fees) Regulations 2004 and we are therefore refusing to comply with your
information request under section 12(1) of the Act. Once it has been
determined Section 12 applies to a request the public authority is not
obliged to search up to the limit.
The appropriate limit for Higher Education Institutions, such as King’s
College London, is currently set at £450 which represents the cost of one
person spending more than 18 hours identifying, locating, retrieving and
extracting information falling within the scope of your request.
The Student and Education Directorate have confirmed that although the
data is held on our databases it cannot be retrieved automatically. To
confirm the “aspirational offer” information for other courses, for all
the overseas offers, would require a manual review of the offers, and
further research to determine what is “under” or “over” the offer
conditions for each qualification. This task is estimated to exceed the 18
working hour limit.
In the interests of transparency, the university has provided what
information it can within the appropriate limit:
In order to remain within the statutory time limit, we can only provide
data on A Level offers for Biomedical Engineering.
Please Note:
Data presented by UCAS cycle, for applicants who provided at least three A
level qualification predicted grades at the point of application for the
course with UCAS code, H160.
The table below shows the number of offer-holders who provided predicted
grades that would not have met their A level offer conditions, should
those predicted grades have been achieved grades (as in the example
provided in the question).
┌──────────┬─────┐
│UCAS cycle│Count│
├──────────┼─────┤
│ 2020 │ 20 │
├──────────┼─────┤
│ 2021 │ 18 │
├──────────┼─────┤
│ 2022 │ 4 │
├──────────┼─────┤
│ 2023 │ 3 │
└──────────┴─────┘
The university may be able to disclose further information if you are
prepared to narrow the scope of your request. For example, if you would
like to get “aspirational offer” information for other courses, please
state the specific courses you want to know about and specify the type of
offer-holders you are interested in. However, we cannot confirm at this
stage if this would bring your request under the appropriate limit, or
that another exemption will not apply.
This completes the university’s response to your information request.

Dear Ms. Dowsey-Magog,
I hope this message finds you well. I appreciate your prompt response to my previous Freedom of Information Act request regarding life sciences and engineering data at King's College London for the years 2020-2023.
Upon reviewing the provided information, I would like to seek additional details specifically related to the field of Medical Physiology. Kindly consider this as a supplementary request within the scope of my original inquiry.
Specifically, I am interested in obtaining information on the number of students who applied to UCAS with one and two grades below the standard entry requirements for Medical Physiology courses within the mentioned timeframe (2020-2023).
I understand the constraints regarding the appropriate limit for information retrieval, and I am open to narrowing the scope further if necessary. Please let me know if any adjustments are required to meet the limitations and facilitate the provision of the requested data.
Yours sincerely,
Sia

Further to your recent request for information held by King’s College
London, I am writing to confirm that the requested information is held by
the university.
Your request
We received your information request on 11^th January 2024 and have

Specifically, I am interested in obtaining information on the number of
students who applied to UCAS with one and two grades below the standard
entry requirements for Medical Physiology courses within the mentioned
timeframe (2020-2023).
Our response
Regarding the data provided for the course with UCAS code, B120:
The request had been interpreted as asking for those applicants who
provided three or more predicted A Level grades at the point of
application, how many had a top three predicted A Level grade profile that
was equivalent to one or two grades below the required A Levels detailed
on the course webpage.
For the 2020 and 2021 UCAS cycles, the required A Levels detailed on the
course webpage were: AAB.
There were two applicants in the 2020 cycle who provided three or more
predicted A Level grades, such that their top three predicted grades were
one grade below the AAB requirement.
There were two applicants in the 2021 cycle who provided three or more
predicted A Level grades, such that their top three predicted grades were
one grade below the AAB requirement; and two applicants with two grades
below the AAB requirement.
For the 2022 and 2023 UCAS cycles, the required A Levels detailed on the
course webpage were: AAA.
There were no applicants in the 2022 cycle who provided three or more
predicted A Level grades, such that their top three predicted grades were
below the AAA requirement.
There was one applicant in the 2023 cycle who provided three or more
predicted A Level grades, such that their top three predicted grades were
one grade below the AAA requirement.
This completes the university’s response to your information request.
