Library fines

The request was successful.

I am conducting a research product in order to ascertain the total number of Library fines that were paid at universities in the UK.

I am therefore writing to ask about library fines during the academic year 2016/2017, under the Freedom of Information Act. For the time period starting from the first day of term, covering the next 364 days (e.g. one full year), please provide:

1. The total amount of money the library received from the payment of overdue items. Exclude costs of replacing lost books if possible – this request solely relates to the cost of items that are returned later than their due date.

Many thanks, and do let me know if you require any further clarification

Yours faithfully,

Jack Forks

Dear Mr Forks

Your request for information relating to library fines at the Royal Agricultural University has been considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, and I can now provide you with the following information:

For the academic year 2016-17 the total amount of money received by the library from the payment of overdue items (excluding the cost of lost books) was £2126.24.

An extra £438.85 in fines was also taken for students who had lost books (we still charge for outstanding fines when students are charged for book replacement as well as the book replacement cost and admin). So the final total of fines taken for the given period was £2565.09.

I hope that this response is helpful to you. If, however, you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled you may request an internal review - details of our review procedure are attached.

Yours sincerely
Laura Butler
