Letter from Minster Urging Equal Access to Council Meetings for Local Bloggers

Richard Taylor made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Communities and Local Government

The request was successful.

From: Richard Taylor

23 February 2011

Dear Department for Communities and Local Government,

Could you please release a copy of the letter Local Government
Minister Bob Neill has reportedly written to all local councils
today urging greater openness and for local bloggers were given the
same access as professional journalists to council proceedings.

The letter is referred to on the Department for Communities and
Local Government website, but no link to a copy of it is provided:

Quote-marks The BBC appear to have written an article based solely on the press release rather than the raw document referred to in it:

This local blogger at least has higher standards :-)

Quote-marks Having chased this request via Twitter I have received two responses.

The first was from the Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire County Council who sent me a copy of the letter (saying the council had been sent it at 14.27). So even councils didn't get it until many hours after its existence had been announced and it was being widely reported on.

Shortly afterwards the Department for Communities and Local Government tweeted and pointed me to their website where they have now posted the letter online:
