Rachael Venables made this Freedom of Information request to North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as part of a batch sent to 41 authorities

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Rachael Venables

Dear North Wales Fire and Rescue Service,

1. I'd like to know how many bariatric rescues the fire service was called out to attend, for each financial year, from 2013 to 2018?

Could you divide all information, by financial year?

Also, if possible, could you provide any details that you can to these rescues - (e.g.) the location type, the rescue required, number of crews called or age of person attended to?

2. Can you also provide the amount spent by the fire service on bariatric-related training and equipment, divided by financial year?

If possible, can you again provide details - so models, hoists, lifting equipment etc.?

I wish to be informed in writing whether you have such information and, if so, I seek the disclosure of that information. If the information is covered by any exemptions, please disclose such information as is not covered by the exemptions.

If you are considering charging for the disclosure of this information, please inform me before any work that would be liable to a charge is carried out.

Yours faithfully,

Rachael Venables

Dear Madam,

Further to your FoI request regarding bariatric assists, this topic has
been the subject of a number of recent requests to North Wales Fire and
Rescue Service (NWFRS), and the NWFRS responses to those requests are
attached and also detailed below. Please confirm whether or not the
content of those responses is sufficient to answer your own enquiry.

Narrative response to Request #840:

Dear Sir,

Further to your recent request made under the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act regarding bariatric assists, the response from North Wales
Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) is as follows:

1)         Please state the number of bariatric rescues attended by your
service in each of the following financial years. Please also provide the
free text description of the incident held in your database.

i)          2013/14

ii)         2014/15

iii)         2015/16

iv)        2016/17

v)         2017/18

vi)        2018/19 to 15.06.18

Please see the attached spreadsheet.

Please  note that a change to our mobilising system, which is linked to
the national Incident Recording System database means that data is
currently only available up to and including the 21st March 2017. Due to
ongoing technical issues North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is unable to
provide the relevant information requested from this date onwards;
however, work is ongoing to restore all reporting functionality.

2)         Please state the gross amount spent by your trust on equipment
to handle or rescue obese service users in each of the following financial
years:

i)          2013/14

ii)         2014/15

iii)         2015/16

iv)        2016/17

v)         2017/18

vi)        2018/19 to 15.06.18

The response for each financial year is ‘Nil’. NWFRS does not have any
bariatric equipment in service and has never have had any, apart from one
bariatric bag stretcher which was on trial for a short while. NWFRS does
not carry out bariatric rescues unless it is a life-threatening incident,
in which case the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST) mobilises its
purpose-made bariatric unit and trained crew.

3)         Please list all equipment to handle obese service users
purchased by your service in each of the following financial years,
including the number of units of each purchased where available.

vi)                 2013/14

ii)         2014/15

iii)         2015/16

iv)        2016/17

v)         2017/18

vi)        2018/19 to 15.06.18

Please see response to Question 2.
