Dear Owen

The formal Latin name for Jesus College is captured in its original
foundation charter of 1571 – transcribed extract below.

“Ipsumque Collegium Collegium Jesus infra Civitatem et Universitatem
Oxoniensem ex fundatione Reginae Elizabeth Anglice vero Jhesus Colledge
within ye City and University of Oxforth of Quene Elizabethes foundation
imperpetuum nominari nuncupari et vocari volumus et decrevimus per
presentes.“

Our archivist also informs me that when the College is being referred to
informally in Latin it is generally called “Collegium Jesu”.

I would add that our archivist, Robin Darwell-Smith, is happy to answer
any further questions you may have, an FOI request is not necessary for
enquiries of this nature.

All the best

Cait
