Dear infocompliance, Resource,

Question 7 is asking the number of applicants who took 4(+) A-Levels which included Further Mathematics.

May I also ask for the figure of applicants taking 3 A-Levels, without Further Mathematics as well?

Yours sincerely,

David Summers

Dear Mr Summers,

We apologise for the delay in contacting you with regards to this Freedom
of Information Request, we have been awaiting some information from the
department that holds the data you have requested before we could proceed
with your request.

The department in question has advised us that in order to give both
figures separately they would first have to identify first how many A
Levels each applicant holds. A-Level information is stored line by line
for each applicant and to find out the information requested it would be
necessary for each individual line of data for each student to be
investigated. The team confirms that for 2017 entry alone, there are 3,383
A Level result records against offer holders for the course L100.

If we estimate 30 seconds per result to group it with any other results
recorded for the applicant and sense check that there's no duplication (eg
for resits) this would equate to over 28 hours worth of work.

Public authorities are not obliged to work past the appropriate costs
limit under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. This is
currently £450, which equates to 18 hours of staff time calculated at £25
an hour as set out in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection
(Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

Due to the reasoning above the University estimates would take in excess
of the 18 hours allowed under the Freedom of Information Act therefore the
cost of complying with the request would exceed the appropriate limit,
therefore it is advised for you to submit a refined request.

The University is obliged to offer guidance as to what would be manageable
under the costs limit so with that in mind, it would be able to provide
data relating to the overall number of people taking Further Mathematics.
This information could be isolated to that subject and the data extracted
very quickly without needing to go into any individual records.

If this information would be of interest to you then please submit a
refined request stating  you would like this to be covered under the
request instead.

If you do submit a refined request, the University will treat it as a
substitute request to your original request below. In the absence of a
refined request, the University will send an official response to your
original request, engaging the costs limit exemption under section 12(1)
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 within the 20 working day limit.

Kind Regards

Dear Mr Summers,

Thank you for your emails dated 24^th May and 25^th June 2018 requesting
information about the University of Warwick. Your request is being
considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Please find below
your request and our response.

May I please request the following information for the entry years of
2016, 2017 and 2018 for the L100 Economics course at the University of
Warwick:

1) Number of Applicants

2) Number of Offers Made

3) Number of Places

4) Mean number of A* predicted grades for those sitting the A-Level, of
whom received an offer

5) Mean number of A* achieved grades for those who sat the A-Level, of
whom received an offer

6) Mean number of A* achieved grades at GCSE, of whom received an offer

7) Number of offer holders who bear Further Mathematics as a fourth
A-Level

After seeking clarification you provided the following information:

Question 7 is asking the number of applicants who took 4(+) A-Levels which
included Further Mathematics. May I also ask for the figure of applicants
taking 3 A-Levels, without Further Mathematics as well?

The University has determined that from its preliminary assessment your
FOI request would be likely to exceed the appropriate costs limit under
section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 due to the fact that
to give the figures on the number of people taking Further Maths,
including both those who had 3 A Levels in total and those who had 4 A
Levels in total, the University would first have to identify how many A
Levels each applicant holds. A-Level information is stored line by line
for each applicant and to find out the information requested it would be
necessary for each individual line of data for each student to be
investigated. The team confirms that for 2017 entry alone, there are 3,383
A Level result records against offer holders for the course L100 which the
University estimated would take in excess of the 18 hours allowed under
the Freedom of Information Act.

The University offered guidance as to what would be manageable under the
cost limit, noting that it may be able to provide data relating to the
overall number of people taking Further Mathematics meet the cost limit
under the FOIA. However, the University has not received any communication
containing a refined request.

Section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act states that a public
authority is not obliged to comply with a request for information if the
authority estimates that the cost of complying with the request would
exceed the appropriate limit. This is currently £450, which equates to 18
hours of staff time calculated at £25 an hour as set out in the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations
2004.

As the University has not received any communication containing a refined
request, which would not exceed the appropriate costs limit, the exemption
under Section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act is engaged.

If you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled by
the University of Warwick, you can request an internal review and in the
first instance you are advised to follow the procedure outlined here:
