Dear NHS Hospital Trust,

I am making a Freedom of Information request for the following information:

Can you specify how many patients under the age of 18 have been treated for knife injuries in your Trust since 2013. Can you give a break down by age and sex.

Over the same period can you tell me how many staff while at work in Trust hospitals have been threatened with a knife or similar sharp object, or attacked by people using knives or similar sharp object.

How many staff or visitors (ie not patients) to Trust hospitals have required treatment following an attack in a hospital.

How many times have police been called to hospitals in the trust area to deal with incidents involving violent behaviour of patients or hospital visitors in each year from 2013 to present?

Yours faithfully,

Andy Buckwell

Dear Mr Buckwell

This is an interim response to your request as we require clarification as
regards your first question:

1.       Can you specify how many patients under the age of 18 have been
treated for knife injuries in your Trust since 2013. Can you give a break
down by age and sex.

In order to extract relevant numbers we would run a query in our patient
database on the clinical coding entered.  The coding can only provide the
level of detail to indicate that an injury was caused by a “sharp object”
only (although this would include knives) The mechanism of the “ injury”
could be determined, if you could clarify which of the following we should
include:

·         For injuries occurring due to being attacked/stabbed with a
knife (this code can also be used if any other sharp object is used)

·         X99 Assault by sharp object

·         For self-inflicted injuries with a knife (this code can also be
used if any other sharp object is used)

·         X78 Intentional self-harm by sharp object

·         For accidental injuries with a knife (this code can also be used
if any other sharp object is used)

·         W26 Contact with other sharp object(s)

2.       Over the same period can you tell me how many staff while at work
in Trust hospitals have been threatened with a knife or similar sharp
object, or attacked by people using knives or similar sharp object.

I can confirm that there have been 10 incidents reported since 2013 where
a member of staff has been threatened with a knife or similar sharp
object.

3.       How many staff or visitors (ie not patients) to Trust hospitals
have required treatment following an attack in a hospital.

I can confirm there has been 1 incident where a member of staff required
treatment following an attack in hospital.

4.       How many times have police been called to hospitals in the trust
area to deal with incidents involving violent  behaviour of patients or
hospital visitors in each year from 2013 to present?

Using the DART monthly analysis extraction, 870 incidents have required
police involvement during this time period.

Please would you let me know if you would like to proceed with question 1.

Best regards

Carole
