Knife injury and knife crime in hospitals

The request was successful.

Dear NHS Hospital Trust,

I am making a Freedom of Information request for the following information:

Can you specify how many patients under the age of 18 have been treated for knife injuries in your Trust since 2013. Can you give a break down by age and sex.

Over the same period can you tell me how many staff while at work in Trust hospitals have been threatened with a knife or similar sharp object, or attacked by people using knives or similar sharp object.

How many staff or visitors (ie not patients) to Trust hospitals have required treatment following an attack in a hospital.

How many times have police been called to hospitals in the trust area to deal with incidents involving violent behaviour of patients or hospital visitors in each year from 2013 to present?

Yours faithfully,

Andy Buckwell

FoI request re: Knife injury and no of staff attacked with sharp object

Ref: 19-AB-1004

Dear Mr Buckwell,

Thank you for your request for information relating to the number of
patients under 18 treated for knife injuries and the number of staff
threatened/attacked with a sharp object since 2013.

This was received on 13 March 2019 and has been dealt with under the terms
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Please find our responses below:

Request 1:

Can you specify how many patients under the age of 18 have been treated
for knife injuries in your Trust since 2013. Can you give a break down by
age and sex?

These results are based on a search of diagnosis codes and keyword search
in presenting complaint:

Triage Category 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
Female ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5
Male ≤5 11 9 9 10 10
Triage Category 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
0-5 years ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5
6-11 years ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5 ≤5
12-17 years ≤5 11 10 10 10 14

Please note that the trust’s policy is not to provide patient or staff
numbers, where the response is less than or equal to five (≤5) as it would
potentially allow identification of the individual patient/staff and would
therefore be personal data. The trust considers that release of that
information would breach the first data protection principle on the
grounds that it would not be fair in all the circumstances.  This
information is therefore exempt under section 40.

Request 2:

Over the same period can you tell me how many staff while at work in Trust
hospitals have been threatened with a knife or similar sharp object, or
attacked by people using knives or similar sharp object.

No incidents of staff being directly attacked by knifes, however ≤5 staff
being threatened or attacked by patients using sharp object at their
disposal.

Request 3:

How many staff or visitors (i.e. not patients) to Trust hospitals have
required treatment following an attack in a hospital?

No record of staff / visitors who have had treatment following a
knife/related incident.

Request 4:

How many times have police been called to hospitals in the trust area to
deal with incidents involving violent  behaviour of patients or hospital
visitors in each year from 2013 to present?
