Dear Goldsmiths, University of London,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I seek the following information about all journalism students:

1. The number of female students, broken down per course.
2. The number of male students, broken down per course.
3. The number of non EU international students, broken down per course.
4. The number of EU students, broken down per course.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

Additionally, I also seek the following regarding journalism faculty:

1. The number of members of faculty (professors) that have resigned, broken down into UK, EU, and International categories. I.e: 4 UK members of staff, 2 EU members of staff, 7 international members of staff.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

I would prefer to receive this information electronically, preferably as a data set, eg. in Excel, NOT as a PDF.

If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using exemptions in the Data Protection Act, please inform me of that fact and cite the exemptions used.

If some parts of this request are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the available data as soon as possible.

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you within the 20-working day statutory time period.

Regards,

Dear Nicole Garcia Merida,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request in which you asked:

A) Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I seek the following information about all journalism students:

1. The number of female students, broken down per course.
2. The number of male students, broken down per course.
3. The number of non EU international students, broken down per course.
4. The number of EU students, broken down per course.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

B) Additionally, I also seek the following regarding journalism faculty:

1. The number of members of faculty (professors) that have resigned, broken down into UK, EU, and International categories. i.e.: 4 UK members of staff, 2 EU members of staff, 7 international members of staff.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

I would prefer to receive this information electronically, preferably as a data set, e.g. in Excel, NOT as a PDF.

If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using exemptions in the Data Protection Act, please inform me of that fact and cite the exemptions used.

If some parts of this request are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the available data as soon as possible.

Our Response:

A. Information regarding Journalism students is attached as Appendices (Students)

B. Information regarding the number of Journalism academic staff who have resigned is attached as Appendices (Staff). Unfortunately, data is only available for the last four years as a result of the change in HR systems in September 2015.

A public authority is required to mitigate the risk of identification (or re-identification) of individuals. Therefore, the College has followed the code of guidance issued by the Information Commissioner’s Officer in anonymising the information we are disclosing to you in order to safeguard individuals’ privacy. Consequently, we are confirming that we are unable to provide you with the granular information that you have requested as we consider that the disclosure of this information particularly when taken together with information in the public domain, could lead to jigsaw identification of individuals, now or in the future, particularly within the College community. The College is satisfied that it may rely on Section 40(2) of the FOI Act in this regard. Therefore, low numbers are referred as less than 5 (<5).

I hope this information satisfies your Freedom of Information request. However, if you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask for it to be reviewed by either contacting us by email: [email address] or by writing to:
