James Purnell, Director, Strategy & Digital: hiring decision; overlap with Creative Connexions project

The request was successful.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

About the hiring of James Purnell, Director, Strategy & Digital.

About the project on his CV called "Creative Capital - World City".

Was the £5m project referred to, or discussed, in the process of hiring Mr Purnell?

If so, what aspects of the process that related to "Creative Capital - World City" are open freedom of information requests?

The public interest was £5m of higher education funding that was spent in controversial ways during Mr Purnell's political career.

regards,
John Robertson

Please be advised the Freedom of Information Act provides a general right of access to recorded information held by public authorities (as defined in section 3 of the Act). This is not a request for recorded information; public authorities are under no obligation to create new information or give an opinion or judgement that is not already recorded in order to respond to a request.

You may find the following link of assistance, which details how to make a valid request under the Act:

It may be helpful if I explain that the role of Director, BBC Strategy and Digital was a direct appointment. The BBC’s Director-General, Tony Hall, has said that he expects his new senior management team to be made up of a mixture of appointments and recruitments. Tony Hall believes that James Purnell is the right person with the relevant skill and experience for this unique role in the BBC, and therefore did not believe any benefit would be gained from a long and costly recruitment process. As James Purnell was appointed directly to the role, the job was not advertised and there were no other applicants or shortlisted candidates.

Further information about James Purnell’s role is available on the BBC website at:
