Collections,

Dear Louise Smith

Thank you for your request for information, sent under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act.

Please find our response to your enquiry below.

How many items does the MOSI currently store that are not on display?
The number of items in the MOSI collection that are currently in store and not on display in a gallery or temporary exhibition is 6041.

How much does it cost to store and maintain these items?
MOSI collection items are in stores in various locations on the museum site. Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with details of the cost of onsite storage as it would be very time consuming to separate the specific costs from the overall cost of the MOSI site. To calculate this cost would exceed the time limits in section 12 Freedom of Information Act 2000. However we can provide the complete costs for the offsite store where about 70% of the items are stored. This figure is £70,430.

Have, or will these items ever be on display?
The museum does not collect items solely for the purpose of display. A proportion of our collection is acquired to support research and is less likely to go on display. There are also factors that can prohibit use of items in display, such as size, condition and hazardous materials. However, many of our stored items will have been on display and will potentially be on display in the future.
Where possible, we make stored items available to researchers, and occasionally include them in temporary exhibitions, in line with the National Heritage Act 1983, which states that "so far as practicable. the Board [of Trustees of the Science Museum] shall (a) Care for, preserve and add to the objects in its collections; (b) Secure that the objects are exhibited to the public; (c) Secure that the objects are available to persons seeking to inspect them in connection with study or research, and (d) Generally promote the public's enjoyment and understanding of science and technology and of the development of those subjects, both by means of the Board's collections and by such other means as they consider appropriate."

Thank you for your interest in the Museum of Science and Industry.
