IT Expenditure & Scottish Suppliers

Nancy Duncan made this Freedom of Information request to Fife Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Fife Council,
Can you supply me with a breakdown of your IT expenditure for the past year for both Education and Council.

Can you give me a breakdown of what IT supplies were purchased and what the costs were?

Can you also tell me how many of the IT suppliers were Scottish companies and if they were not Scottish companies can you give me a break down of suppliers by geographical location?

I am trying to establish how much money is currently being spent on IT supplies (hardware for example laptops servers PCs etc, software, consultancy etc)and how much of that money is going back into Scottish businesses.

I do hope I have explained myself clearly enough but should you require clarification please let me know.

Yours faithfully,
Nancy Duncan

Dear Karen Welsh,

Thank you for your response to my enquiry and my apologies for not making myself clear.

In answer to your queries

Q. Can you clarify what you mean exactly by IT Supplies – do you mean hardware only or other IT supplies such as disks, pen drives etc.?

A. I'm am looking for information on Hardware (servers, SANs etc), Software Licenses (vmware, citrix, microsoft etc) & IT Support (virtualisation, external support,IT Security etc) only. I do not require information of supplies of disks, pen drives, consumables and IT sundries etc.

Q. Can you clarify what you mean by Scottish companies? Does this mean if they have a Head office in Scotland? Again, can you clarify what you mean by geographical location – do you mean where their Head office is based?

A. By Scottish companies I mean companies who are registered in Scotland, not English or Global companies with a offices in Scotland.

I am trying to establish what proportion of the Fife Council IT budget is going back into the Scottish IT Industry. I do not mean Companies who only have an office in Scotland but those who are actual Scottish companies.

I hope this clarifies my request and appreciate your time on this matter, please let me know if you require further information.

Yours sincerely,

Nancy Duncan

Dear Karen Welsh,

Thank you for the information supplied but can you please clarify my second question?

Can you also tell me how many of the IT suppliers were Scottish companies and if they were not Scottish companies can you give me a break down of suppliers by geographical location? By Scottish companies I mean companies who are registered in Scotland, not English or Global companies with offices in Scotland.

Answer – I’m sorry but Fife Council does not hold this information.

Can you tell me who would have this information? I'm surprised that Fife Council do not have a record of whom they have purchased goods from, does the council not have a record of suppliers they have purchased goods / services from?

I still need to find out how much of the business you have expressed in the spreadsheet was done through Scottish companies and therefore would be grateful if you can tell me where this information is held for the council?

Yours sincerely,

Nancy Duncan

Karen Welsh, Fife Council

Hi Nancy,

We do have a record of who we have purchased goods from which we can
supply you with no problem. What we do not hold within the Council is
where those companies are registered or have their head office.  Let me
know if you'd like me to send you anything further.

Regards.

Karen.

Hi Karen,

That's great thanks it gives me something to work on.

As a final request would it be at all possible to find out exactly what was purchased ie what the tenders were for? It would be really helpful for my study.

Once again thank you for your prompt response and assistance with this it's much appreciated.

Kind regards

Nancy
