IT budget and IT systems

The request was successful.

Dear Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland,

Can you please give me an indication of the current IT budget and which IT systems are used to support and manage inspections? Do you plan to improve your inspection management process in the next year or two with the help of the right technology? Also can you please confirm the number of inspectors and the number of inspections a year?

Yours faithfully,

Monika Wisniewska

HM Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland

Dear Monika,

Thank you for your email FOI request for information on IT budget and inspections for HMIPS.

Our current spend on IT to the end of March 2017 (1 April 2016 - 31 March 2017) was £507. We use mainly Microsoft word for our inspections as it is free text we require - basically inspectors record their findings for each of the Quality Indicators (QIs) they happen to be inspecting. We have 156 QIs which form our standards for inspecting and monitoring prisons - see link to standards below:

With regard to improvements to our inspection process we are currently reviewing the QIs with the aim being to rationalise these to a slightly smaller number, as there is a degree of overlap between some of these.

The number of inspections undertaken per year varies, for example in 2014-15 it was 6 and in 2013-14 it was 5 - full details of the inspections undertaken are available from our website at https://www.prisonsinspectoratescotland.....

Each year's annual report contains a summary of the inspections undertaken in that year and are available in our publications section of our website at https://www.prisonsinspectoratescotland..... Individual inspection reports contain details of the inspectors and from which organisation they are from, again these are available from our publications section on our website.

If you require any additional information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

If you are unhappy with this response to your request, you may ask us to carry out an internal review, by writing to David Strang, Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland, Y1 Spur, Saughton House, Broomhouse Drive, Edinburgh, EH11 3XD. Your request should explain why you wish a review to be carried out, and should be made within 40 working days of receipt of this letter, and we will reply within 20 working days of receipt. If you are not satisfied with the result of the review, you then have the right to make a formal complaint to the Scottish Information Commissioner – contact details below.
