Islamophobic Hate Crime Figures

The request was partially successful.

Dear Surrey Police,

Could you please provide me with the total number of reported Islamophobic hate crimes for each year from 1st January 2013 to 31st May 2019. (Annual figures).

Could the data be broken down into each separate district. Thank you.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Amber Mehmood

Dear AMBER MEHMOOD,

Freedom of Information: 002061/19

I write to acknowledge receipt of your Freedom of Information Request
(FOI).

The Act requires us to respond to FOI requests within 20 working days of
receiving the request. Unfortunately, at the moment, there is likely to be
a delay in us providing you with a response. We currently have a
significant backlog which we have reported to the Information
Commissioner's Office. We are working with the ICO to reduce the delay.

I would like to apologise in advance and hope that this does not cause you
too much inconvenience.

Yours Sincerely,

Dear AMBER MEHMOOD,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST REFERENCE: 002061/19

I write in connection with your request for information received on
received 17/06/2019.

Could you please provide me with the total number of reported Islamophobic
hate crimes for each year from 1st January 2013 to 31st May 2019. (Annual

Section 1 of the Freedom of information Act 2000 (FOIA) places two duties
on public authorities. Unless exemptions apply, the first duty at s1(1)(a)
is to confirm or deny whether the information specified within a request
is held. The second duty at s1(1)(b) is to disclose information that has
been confirmed as being held.

The information that you have requested is held by Surrey Police. Please

Important Notes:

Crime

   -  Results are extracted from a live crime information system, which is
subject to change over time.

   -  Only notifiable crimes committed in Surrey are included (those the
police are required to notify formally to the Home Office).

   -  The date a crime was recorded (ENTERED_DATE) is used to determine if
it falls within the specified  time period.   The crime may have been
committed in a different time period.

   -  Islamophobic hate crime is identified using the Faith flag, and
where the CI_HATECRIME_TEXT field contains "ANTI MUSLIM". The Faith flag
(like all Hate Crime flags) are applied at the recorders discretion.

   -  Values are only available from January 2015, as this is when the
CI_HATECRIME_TEXT was introduced and we were able to identify an "ANTI
MUSLIM" related hate crime.

I bring to your attention that police forces in the United Kingdom are
routinely required to provide statistics to government bodies and the
recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for
recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used
locally in capturing the data. The data warehouse is a "live" system and
is subject to change as incidents are finalised. In other words, incidents
may be initially recorded under a specific category but change with new
information. It should be noted that for these reasons this force's
response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with
any other response you may receive.

Surrey Police provides you the right to request a re-examination of your
case under its review procedure. How to do this is set out in the attached
Appeals Notice. Having followed the full procedure, if you are still
dissatisfied, then you have the right to direct your comments to the
Information Commissioner who will give your case consideration.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in
Surrey Police. Should you have any further enquiries concerning this
matter, please write or contact us on 01483 - 630007 quoting the reference
number above.

Yours Sincerely,

Alan Bayless
