Dear Gary Rooney,

It does nt work, it keeps telling me to make sure the capitals lock is off, which it is.

Yours sincerely,

Gary Rooney, Stirling Council

Brian

The password is 27 characters long - if you have copied it and pasted it
from the email it picks up an extra 2 characters (spaces) at the end for
some reason meaning it does not match.

The error message about the caps lock is just a standard message that
says the password did not match

if you can try again and if it fails I will resend it with a different
(shorter) password on it on Monday morning

sorry for the inconvenience

Regards
Gary

FWIW, it worked for me with that password. Although it seems a bit pointless to protect it anyway if the password itself is going to be sent in the clear via the same route as the spreadsheet.

How pointless is this password system!

Is it just a way of forcing people to acknowledge receipt or something.

I've sent Stirling Council a wee email:

'This is a normal business enquiry.

Whilst visiting the whatdotheyknow.com website I became aware of an intriguing practice excersied by Stirling Council.

I noted that when responding to requests for information that were submitted under the provisions of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 with attachments, these attachments were password protected. The only way for the recipient to obtain the password is to then further contact you.

It would be useful if you could provide some information as to why this practice has been adopted by Stirling Council. For what reason is it done? What does it achieve? Do you ever find people passing comment on it (good, bad or neutral)?

I look forward to hearing from you.'

I will post a comment when I hear back from them.
