Dear Mr Healey-Ryder,
Thank you for your email of 2 August in which you made the following request for information:
How much has the UK Government invested in rolling out super fast broadband in each
region and country of the UK, each year covering the period 2009-2019?
For clarification, as responsibility for broadband is reserved to Westminster, this
request covers only funds invested directly by the UK government. This does not
include expenditure by devolved administrations, unless additional funds have been
given to those administrations specifically earmarked for broadband.
I would appreciate the reply detailing each region and country of the UK (regions of
England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), along with an aggregate for each year.
We have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act). I can
confirm that the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) holds some
information within scope of your request, specifically for the years 2012/13 to 2018/19.
However, I have refused your request under section 21 because the information is already
publicly available at:
https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2019/07/q1-2019-bduk-superfast-
broadband-adoption-progress-by-uk-region.html. Please note there are articles for each quarter
of most of the timeframe of your request.
For added information the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport took over the
responsibility for delivery of superfast broadband from Defra from year 2012/13 onwards. You
will need to contact DEFRA for spend during years 2009/10 to 2011/12.
Yours sincerely,
Freedom of Information Team
