Dear Mr Botham

I write further to previous correspondence with a response under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I have copied your questions and put my response underneath.

1. How many investigators do you employ in relation to complaints against
those with GMC registration?

The following numbers of staff conduct investigations:

o 14 Officers conduct Provisional Enquiries;
o 75 Investigation Advisers and Officers in our Investigation Teams
manage a case load of investigations;

(2) For each of the years 2016, 2017,2018 2019 what is the mean average
time for an investigation to conclude?

Please find a table below which responds to this question:

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|  |  |2016|2017|2018|2019|
|-------------------------------+--------------------+----+----+----+----|
|Time from receipt of referral | | | | | |
|to final Investigation | | | | | |
|Committee/Case Examiner |Mean number of weeks|48 |47 |41 |45 |
|decision: | | | | | |
| | | | | | |
|  | | | | | |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

I should note that the data that we report to the Professional Standards
Authority is the median number of weeks. This is because it does not allow
a small number of cases which are abnormally high (due to factors such as
judicial proceedings) to artificially skew the numbers and thus provides a
more representative number for the average case. I have provided the
median numbers below:

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|  |  |2016|2017 |2018 |2019|
|---------------------------------+----------------+----+-----+-----+----|
|Time from receipt of referral to | | | | | |
|final Investigation |Median number of| | | | |
|Committee/Case Examiner decision:|weeks |35.6|37.14|29.43|30.1|
| | | | | | |
|  | | | | | |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

I should explain that these figures are for all cases, including cases
which are referred by the Case Examiners to a Tribunal.

3)  For each of the years 2016, 2017,2018 2019 how many complaints have
been received in total by the GMC?

This information is available publicly using our [1]data explorer webpage
which allows you to see the answer to this question and provides much more
information besides, for example how these complaints were dealt with.

(4) For each of the years 2016, 2017,2018 2019 (a) how many reg12
applications have been made challenging the outcome of an investigation
and (b) how many reg12 applications were successful

Please find a table below which responds to this question. I should note
that the number of requests includes internal requests.

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|Year|Number of requests |Number of reviews |Number of reopen |
| |received |commenced |decisions |
|----+----------------------+----------------------+---------------------|
|2016|352 |14 |9 |
|----+----------------------+----------------------+---------------------|
|2017|408 |71 |34 |
|----+----------------------+----------------------+---------------------|
|2018|466 |73 |32 |
|----+----------------------+----------------------+---------------------|
|2019|490 |65 |40 |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

I hope you find this information helpful.
