We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.
 
We can confirm that we do hold some information of the description
specified in your request. Our responses are given below. We have provided
you with data from the Student Complaints department and Security Services
department only, as to exhaustively search all possible locations for
student complaints regarding sexual assaults for the academic year
requested would require a search of records held at School and Department
level. There are over 60 such Faculties, Schools and Departments and their
records are not recorded centrally in an easily searchable, aggregated
format, however, it is likely that the above locations contain the
majority of complaint data and this is provided below.
 
1a. How many rape and sexual assault complaints were made by students on
campus in academic year 2016/17?

The exact number has been withheld under section 40(2) of FOIA. This
applies to numbers that are small enough to potentially identify
individuals, and where this applies this has been indicated using <=4.
 
Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA when the information requested is personal data
relating to someone other than the requestor, and its disclosure would
breach any of the Data Protection principles. In this case we believe that
the disclosure of information in respect of potentially identifiable
individuals would not be within their reasonable expectations and as such
would be unfair and in breach of the first data protection principle which
requires personal data to be processed fairly and lawfully. We have
however substituted these numbers with the <=4 range to assist you as much
as possible.
 
Please note, we have taken ‘complaints… made by students on campus’ to
mean, complaints where the alleged incident involved a student of the
University and took place on campus (including halls of residence), only.
 
1b. How many were investigated?
