Freedom of Information Officer, St John's College, Cambridge

Dear Ben Mansfield,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request concerning the interview
and admission test statistics for Modern and Medieval Languages (MML)
applicants to St John’s College (the 'College').

Provision of the requested applicant information in the format specified
is exempt under Section 40(2) of the FOI Act (personal information); given
the small numbers involved it would create a real risk of individuals
being identified and their personal data becoming public knowledge. It
would also require the processing of the personal data of individual
applicants for a purpose other than that for which it was obtained and
would therefore conflict with the Data Protection Principles. However, we
hope the following information will prove useful.

For students who applied in the 2021/22 application year to study MML at
the College:

• admissions test scores ranged from 26.5 to 43;
• scores ranged from 4 to 10 for interview 1;
• scores ranged from 4 to 10 for interview 2; and
• scores ranged from 4 to 10 for interview 3.

For students who applied in the 2021/22 application year to study MML at
the College and who entered the College in 2022:

• admissions test scores ranged from 27 to 41;
• scores ranged from 7.5 to 10 for interview 1;
• scores ranged from 7.5 to 10 for interview 2; and
• scores ranged from 7.5 to 10 for interview 3.

The above data does not include the scores of students who applied in the
2020/21 application year to study MML at the College, and who deferred
their entry or requested a deferred entry until 2022.

For information the College did not take any MML applicants from the
summer or winter pool.

For clarity, the application year runs from applications opening in
September to the end of September in the following year. For example, the
2021/22 application year ran from the opening of applications in September
2021 to the end of the confirmation period in September 2022 and includes
applicants for standard entry in 2022 and deferred entry in 2023.

If you are dissatisfied with my response you may seek an internal review
in writing setting out the grounds for review. It will be dealt with by a
College Officer. Should you not be satisfied with the outcome of the
review, you will have a right of appeal to the Information Commissioner by
writing to him at Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water
Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely,
