Internet and IT Infrastructure
Dear Coventry University,
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 may I kindly request the following information about the University’s internet and IT infrastructure:
1. How much did the university spend on broadband in the 2019/20 financial year?
2. Who is your internet network provider?
3. What is the average network speed on each of your campuses? Please list the name of each campus and the internet speed for each. Here is a tool for testing speed if needed: https://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedt...
4. What percentage of each university campus is covered by wifi? Please list the name of each campus and the percentage of wifi coverage.
5. Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many times have you switched network providers?
6. How many broadband routers do you have across all campus buildings?
7. Do you have fibre-optic broadband in any campus buildings?
8. Do any of the university-owned halls of residence require an ethernet cable as opposed to wifi? If yes, please list the names of the halls of residence.
9. Do any of the university-owned halls of residence have the option to connect to both an ethernet cable and wifi? If yes, please list the names of the halls of residence.
10. Do you have a data destruction policy?
11. Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many student complaints has the university received relating to the “internet”, “WiFi” and “broadband”? Please list the number of complaints per calendar year.

Thank you for your email. Please be aware that University will be closed
from 18th December 2020 to 6th of January 2021. It may take us a little
longer to respond to your enquiry/request than normal due to this
closure.
In particular:
Freedom of Information Requests:
* If you submitted your request before the 20^th of November and the
deadline for the response falls on or before 18^th of December, we
will endeavour to respond to your request as normal.
* If you submitted your request after 20^th of November and the deadline
for the response falls within the closure period (18^th December – 6
January), we may not be able to respond to your request before the
planned closure period. In such circumstances, the timescale for the
response may need to be extended to take into account the period when
the University will be closed. In most cases, the timescale for the
response will be extended by the amount of the days the University is
closed. For example: If you submitted your request on the 25^th of
November the deadline would be 23^rd of December. As University is
closed from 18^th of December, the response deadline would be extended
to 11^th January 2021. We will advise you of our expected response
times when we acknowledge your request.
Data Subject Requests:
* If you submitted your request before the 18^th of November and the
deadline for the response falls on or before 18^th of December, we
will endeavour to respond to your request as normal, unless an
extension is required. In which case we will inform you of the
extension on or before the 18^th December.
* If you submitted your request after 18th of November and the deadline
for the response falls within the closure period (18^th December – 6
January ), we may not be able to respond to your request before the
planned closure period. In such circumstances, the timescale for the
response may need to be extended to take into account the period when
the university will be closed. In most cases, the timescale for the
response will be extended by the amount of the days the University is
closed. For example: If you submitted your request on the 23rd of
November the deadline would be 23^rd of December. As University is
closed from 18^th of December, the response deadline would be 25^th of
January 2021. We will advise you of our expected response times when

£92,676.00 but this includes the subscription to Jisc which covers a lot
of other services. We don’t know the percentage for the Internet
provision.
2. Who is your internet network provider?
JANET, Virgin, BT, Tata, Airtel, Starhub, Singtel, Du, Netia
3. What is the average network speed on each of your campuses?
Please list the name of each campus and the internet speed for each. Here
is a tool for testing speed if needed:
Coventry 10Gbps, Cutlers Exchange 1Gbps, University House 1Gbps, Mitre
Passage 500Mbps, Delhi 100Mbps, Singapore 250Mbps, Dubai 120Mbps, Poland
1Gbps, Ryton 100Mbps, Dagenham 1Gbps, Scarborough 500Mbps.
4. What percentage of each university campus is covered by wifi?
Please list the name of each campus and the percentage of wifi coverage.
We would estimate up to 99% across all occupied spaces on every campus. We
can only estimate as to be completely sure we would have to do a full
wireless survey, which would take excessive amount of time and would be
over the cost limit under s12 of Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Quadrant Hall, Priory Hall, Singer Hall, Godiva Place, The Cycle Works can
all connect using Ethernet cable and/or WiFi
10. Do you have a data destruction policy?
