Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 may I kindly request the following information about the University’s internet and IT infrastructure:

1. How much did the university spend on broadband in the 2019/20 financial year?
2. Who is your internet network provider?
3. What is the average network speed on each of your campuses? Please list the name of each campus and the internet speed for each. Here is a tool for testing speed if needed: https://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedt...
4. What percentage of each university campus is covered by wifi? Please list the name of each campus and the percentage of wifi coverage.
5. Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many times have you switched network providers?
6. How many broadband routers do you have across all campus buildings?
7. Do you have fibre-optic broadband in any campus buildings?
8. Do any of the university-owned halls of residence require an ethernet cable as opposed to wifi? If yes, please list the names of the halls of residence.
9. Do any of the university-owned halls of residence have the option to connect to both an ethernet cable and wifi? If yes, please list the names of the halls of residence.
10. Do you have a data destruction policy?
11. Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many student complaints has the university received relating to the “internet”, “WiFi” and “broadband”? Please list the number of complaints per calendar year.

Dear Ellen Blacow,

 

I write in response to your recent Freedom of Information request relating
to internet and IT infrastructure at the University.  A copy of your full
request is attached below.

 

1.           How much did the university spend on broadband in the 2019/20
financial year?

Response: the University does not use broadband. We have dedicated fibre
connections to the JANET network, provided as part of our annual JISC
membership.

 

2.           Who is your internet network provider?

Response:  the University’s internet network provider is JISC (JANET).

 

3.           What is the average network speed on each of your campuses?

Please list the name of each campus and the internet speed for each. Here
is a tool for testing speed if needed:

Response: the University’s average network speed is 1Gb Fibre Link Active,
and 1Gb Fibre link passive at our main Longdales Road Campus, Lincoln.
This is the same at our second campus site, at Lincolnshire Open Research
& Information Centre (LORIC). LORIC connects via the same internet
connection.

 

4.           What percentage of each university campus is covered by wifi?
Please list the name of each campus and the percentage of Wi-Fi coverage.

Response: the University has a 90%+ coverage in all our learning and
social spaces at our main Longdales Road campus and at our LORIC site.

 

5.           Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many times have
you switched network providers?

Response: the University has not switched network provider between January
2015 and December 2020.

 

6.           How many broadband routers do you have across all campus
buildings?

Response: the University does not have broadband; we have two industry
standard firewall/routers.

 

7.           Do you have fibre-optic broadband in any campus buildings?

Response: all the University’s buildings connect via fibres, which then
connect to the internet via the JANET fibre feed.

 

8.           Do any of the university-owned halls of residence require an
ethernet cable as opposed to wifi?  If yes, please list the names of the
halls of residence.

Response: none of the University owned halls of residence require an
ethernet cable.

 

9.           Do any of the university-owned halls of residence have the
option to connect to both an ethernet cable and wifi? If yes, please list
the names of the halls of residence.

Response: none of the University owned halls of residence have the option
to connect to both an ethernet cable and Wi-Fi.

 

10.         Do you have a data destruction policy?

Response: yes, the University has a data destruction procedure in the form
of our IT Equipment Disposal Policy, which references the WEEE
Regulations. You can access the policy [1]here.

 

11.         Between January 2015 and December 2020, how many student
complaints has the university received relating to the “internet”, “WiFi”
and “broadband”? Please list the number of complaints per calendar year.

Response: the University has not received any complaints from students
relating to the internet or Wi-Fi, between January 2015 and December 2020.
