International Student Statistics: International Social and Public Policy with Politics

We're waiting for Rema to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear London School of Economics,

I would like to know the information regarding the admissions of international applicants (non-UK) applicants and offer holders to the BSc International Social and Public Policy with Politics (LL) course for the cycles 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2019/0 (if available). Here are the following questions:

1) What are the average grades achieved by the international students for their I/GCSE or O-levels?

2) What is the average UMS (or Percentage Mark Scale for CIE) for AS-level of the international students granted an offer?

3) What are the lowest grades in I/GCSE or O-levels achieved by international students that were given a place, for students that sat for the exams with more than 5 subjects? For example, AAAABBBB.

4) What are the lowest grades for AS-levels and A-level prediction of international students guaranteed a place? For example, ABC.

5) Does the institution consider the performance of the international students' secondary school (where they sat for their I/GCSE or O-levels) in relation to their attained results?

It would be helpful if the year is indicated for each of the answers.
A prompt response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,
Rema Mohseneh

Dear Rema

Further to your recent FoI request, the Schools response is provided
below:

Q1) What are the average grades achieved by the international students for
their I/GCSE or O-levels?

Please note:

 a. The BSc International Social and Public Policy with Politics has
actually only been running for the 2019/0 academic year. As such, we
do not have a wealth of historical data to report to you upon.

 b. As there is a wide variation in the number of GCSEs taken by each
applicant and only a small dataset to analyse, I am not sure how
meaningful a simple average would be. The lowest grade would always be
for someone with 6 subjects even though there could be someone with 13
GCSEs who got lower grades. As such, I have provided you with the raw
GCSE results data of all international (non-UK) applicants and offer
holders to allow you to analyse the data directly.

2) What is the average UMS (or Percentage Mark Scale for CIE) for AS-level
of the international students granted an offer?

We do not receive UMS marks from UCAS - data not held.

3) What are the lowest grades in I/GCSE or O-levels achieved by
international students that were given a place, for students that sat for
the exams with more than 5 subjects? For example, AAAABBBB.

Please refer to Q1 above.

4) What are the lowest grades for AS-levels and A-level prediction of
international students guaranteed a place? For example, ABC.

Again, we often have students presenting with 4 (or more) A-Levels so this
is not straightforward question to respond to. We also have some A-Levels
that are excluded in some circumstances (e.g. Language A-Levels) and some
that are always excluded (e.g. General Studies).  As such, and also for
the reasons stated in question 1, given the size of the dataset that
currently exists we are not in a position to provide any meaningful answer
to this question.

5) Does the institution consider the performance of the international
students' secondary school (where they sat for their I/GCSE or O-levels)
in relation to their attained results?

We do not receive this data from UCAS. As such the answer to this question
is ‘no’.
