Internal phone extension numbers

Feargal Hogan made this Freedom of Information request to Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Waiting for an internal review by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust of their handling of this request.

Dear Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust,

On your public facing telephone system you suggest callers should dial the extension number for the department or consultant they require. But unfortunately there is no indication of where these extension numbers might be found.

Could you please provide a copy of your full internal telephone directory for ESH?

Or point me in the direction of where it might be found on your website?

Many thanks

Yours faithfully,
Feargal Hogan

Dear Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust's handling of my FOI request 'Internal phone extension numbers'.

The reasons given in the refusal is that Trust policy is not to release personal details of lower salary grade staff members. I believe the FoI legislation allows the Trust to redact personal information, and I certainly would be happy to have such personal names redacted. I believe that the refusal therefore does not comply with the legislative requirements.

I have no interest in acquiring personal details, rather I would like to have a list of departments and positions and their associated extension numbers. The telephone system at the hospital actually has a message that says "If you know the extension number you require please dial it now". I want to be able to do just that. Your online directory requires me to know how the hospital has categorised it's department in order to find the extension number I require. Often the hospitals own categorisation is of a technical/medical nature rather than one that is accessible to lay people.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/i...

Yours faithfully,

Feargal Hogan

Dear Feargal
Freedom of information request
I am writing in response to your request for information which has been handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
Your questions and our responses are shown below:
Could you please provide a copy of your full internal telephone directory for ESH?
Trust policy is that we will only release personal details of staff including names where the staff member is above a certain grade. Releasing the Trust telephone directory is not consistent with this policy, in that it would mean that we were sharing information about staff that was more junior. Therefore we are unable to share the entire directory.
If you would like to send a list of the departments or similar that you require the telephone numbers for, we would be happy to share that information.
I hope this information is helpful, but if you are unhappy with our response, or the way in which your request has been handled, you may request an independent internal review. This would be undertaken by an appropriate senior member of staff at the Trust, who has had no involvement in dealing with your original request. We aim to deal with internal reviews within 20 working days following receipt. If you wish to request one, please set out your grounds for asking for the review in writing and send it by post or email:
By post:
Please address your letter to “Freedom of Information – Information Access Appeal” and send it to our address as shown on this letter.
By Email:

Should you remain dissatisfied following an internal review, you would have the right to appeal to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). However, I should point out that under section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act, you are obliged to exhaust the Trust’s own internal review process before appealing to the ICO. The ICO’s contact details are:

Dear Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust,

Please can you advise why I have not received any response, other than an acknowledgement, to my request for an Internal Review?

All the normal time limits have now passed.
