During the last year, Standards for England have been carrying out an inquiry into the behaviour of Cllr Esmond Jenkins of Cotswold District Council. This process culminated in a hearing at Cotswold District Council offices from the 17th to the 20th of January 2012.

Thank you for your request for information which Standards for England received on 23rd January 2012. You asked us to detail the full costs to the taxpayer of Standards for England's inquiry into the behaviour of Councillor Esmond Jenkins of Cotswold District Council, I am dealing with your request under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The cost of the enquiry to Standards for England is estimated to be £63,362.45, this includes Standards for England staff costs incurred through the investigation and hearing, travel expenses and external legal representation. This figure does not include any costs incurred by Cotswold District Council as we do not hold that information. Please note that Standards for England staff costs are calculated using estimated staff time as the organisation does not use time recording.

If you consider that the decisions set out in this letter are wrong for any reason or have a complaint about the way in which your request for information has been dealt with you should write to Mr Paul Hoey, Head of Strategic Relations at the above address. He will undertake a full re-evaluation of your case.

If, following review of the matter by the Head of Strategic Relations, you remain dissatisfied with the handling of your request you have the right under section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.
