Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

I would like to request the following information:

1) The total number of first-time Universal Credit applications made by applicants who have become unemployed job seekers in 2018*^

2) Of these applicants, how many received their full entitlement to UC in their FIRST MONTH and how many only received a partial payment?

3) Of those who only received partial payments, could you break these down into reasons why only partial payments were made i.e. employer earnings, sanctions etc

*I would like the most recent, full year data you have. If 2018 is incomplete, I would like the same information for 2017 instead. Or 17/18, 16/17 if you work in tax years.
^i.e. not those who are incapacitated by sickness/illness/disability/injury etc. I only want people who have become unemployed but are actively seeking work.

Yours faithfully,

Francesca Hart

Dear [email address] on behalf of DWP Central FOI Team,

Thank you for providing the information I have requested.

I would just like some clarification on this section:
"Of the 164,000 claims where a payment was made:
129,000 (79% of new claims which resulted in a payment) were paid in full on time
14,000 (8% of new claims which resulted in a payment) were paid in part on time.
21,000 (13% of new claims which resulted in a payment) were paid late"

When you say "in full/in part", does this relate to someone's full entitlement? I.e. "in full" means the full amount of their UC entitlement which was not reduced or sanctioned by any amount for any reason? Or does this mean their full/part payment of entitlement after reductions/sanctions have been made?

Many thanks

Yours sincerely,

Francesca Hart
