Dear General Register Office,

I have had three communications from the Teachers’ Pensions regarding the death of a teacher called Geraldine White in 2018. They told me today that they are acting on information that you sent them and in spite of the fact that I have a unique TP number and NI number which are clearly not the same as that of the deceased Geraldine White, I have to update them every year to, prove that I am entitled to a Teachers’ Pension. Can you please let me know the information that you are sending them about me which they have to follow up.

Yours faithfully,
Geraldine White

Dear Geraldine,

Thank you for your email. It may be helpful to explain that the Registrar General for England and Wales (through the General Register Office) is able to share death registration data with other government departments and private sector organisations to assist in the prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of offences. The following link explains the scheme under which death data was shared in this particular case.

Once the information is shared it is the responsibility of the receiving organisation to ensure it adheres to data protection principles when processing data and that the correct record is updated with the change in circumstances.

I am sorry for the difficulties that you have been experiencing with your pension provider, however it is for the receiving organisation, in this case Teacher’s Pensions, to decide how the information is used and to advise you on how to resolve the error that has been made.

Kind regards,

Sue Gautrey
