Information regarding the acquisition of Oak National Academy
Dear Department for Education,
We write to request information and documentation pertaining to the Department for Education’s activities. Please provide a response and all documents electronically. We look forward to receiving your response within 20 days of the date of this letter.
The British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) understands that DfE intends to set up an Arms Length Body, and transfer ownership of Oak National Academy (ONA) to it in order to facilitate the production of free curriculum resources to schools across the UK. In relation to this;
1. Please provide copies of all correspondence (letters, emails, etc) sent to the DfE from either multi-academy trusts, individual schools or teachers (redacted as appropriate to protect identities) indicating support for ONA becoming a government body.
2. Please provide copies of all correspondence (letters, emails, etc) sent to the DfE from either multi-academy trusts, individual schools or teachers (redacted as appropriate to protect identities) indicating concern and/or resistance to ONA becoming a government body.
3. Please confirm how much money has been committed by the DfE and/or the Treasury to put ONA on a long-term footing.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Doyle
Thank you for contacting the Department for Education.

Dear Mr Doyle,
Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 22^nd
April 2022. You requested the following:
The British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) understands that DfE
intends to set up an Arms Length Body, and transfer ownership of Oak
National Academy (ONA) to it in order to facilitate the production of free
curriculum resources to schools across the UK. In relation to this;
1. Please provide copies of all correspondence (letters, emails, etc) sent
to the DfE from either multi-academy trusts, individual schools or
teachers (redacted as appropriate to protect identities) indicating
support for ONA becoming a government body.
2. Please provide copies of all correspondence (letters, emails, etc) sent
to the DfE from either multi-academy trusts, individual schools or
teachers (redacted as appropriate to protect identities) indicating
concern and/or resistance to ONA becoming a government body.
3. Please confirm how much money has been committed by the DfE and/or the
Treasury to put ONA on a long-term footing.
I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(“the Act”).
The Department is unable to confirm whether it holds the information you
have requested, because it estimates that the cost of determining whether
it holds the information would exceed the cost threshold applicable to
central Government. This is £600 and represents the estimated cost of one
person spending 3½ working days in determining whether the Department
holds the information.
Under section 12 of the Act the Department is therefore not obliged to
comply with your request and will not be processing it further.
However, if you were to make a new request for a narrower category of
information or limit the scope of your request, the Department may be able
to comply with your request within the cost limit, although I cannot
guarantee that this will be the case.
It may help if I outline some possible ways of narrowing your request. You
may want to refine the search to include fewer search points, use more
specific terms to search, or refine the time frame in which you would like
us to conduct this search.
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by an
independent review panel, which were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Sincerely,
Grace Hickman
