Information on the Black and Ethnic Minority Students attending the University
Dear University College London,
I would be very grateful if you could provide me with anonymised information on the following questions based on Black and Ethnic Minorities (BEMs) students:
1) Numbers and percentages of Black and Ethnic Minorities (BEMs) that get an offer from your university and what gender they are
2) Number and percentage of BEMs that attend the university after meeting their offer
3) BEMs GCSE grades
4) BEMs A-level predicted grades
5) BEMs actual A-level grades
6) The degree course that they applied for
7) Type of school they went to e.g. state, private, grammar
8) The BEMs socio-economic background
9) How many and what percentages of BEMs parents didn’t go to university? How many of their parents did go to university?
10) The overall numbers and percentages of BEMs that applied to the university
I do not need any names, ages or personal information.
If possible, please also provide the same information for all years from 2010 onwards, or for at least 3 years.
Yours faithfully,
Miss C Ogbuju

Dear Cynthia,
Thank you for your below request for information.
Can you please clarify the following:-
Could you clarify whether the query relates to undergraduates only?
Could you clarify whether the query relates to UK-domiciled students only?
Can you clarify how you expect the data to look? For example, for part (3) of your request - are you expecting something like A-star grades = 4,000, A grades = 5,000, B grades = 3,000, C grades = 1,000 etc.? Or are you expecting individualised data per student?
Please note that if you require data about non-UK students and postgraduates, we have estimated that we may exceed the 18-hours' time limit for compliance. In order to provide you with this data, can you prioritise the data that you require so that we can provide you with the information we hold up until we have reached the time limit to comply.
Kind regards,
Mehwish Sultan

Dear Finance.FOI Requests,
The data should be about undergraduates BEM students only.
The data should relate to UK-domiciled BEM students only.
For the data for part (3) of my request - are I am expecting something like A-star grades = 4,000, A grades = 5,000, B grades = 3,000, C grades = 1,000. I am not expecting individualised data per student.
I have a template of how I want the information to be presented but there isn't an option to attach it on this service but I would like the information to please be presented in a clear and ordered manner so that I can read of it easily.
Yours sincerely,
Miss C Ogbuju
Dear Cynthia,
We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.
We can confirm that we do hold information of the description specified in
your request. Where this information is held and is not exempt, it is
provided in the attached PDF documents.
As you can see, exact counts of four or less have been withheld because
these are personal data of third parties or, if linked with other personal
identifiers in the public domain, would be likely to become personal data.
This information has been withheld under section 40(2) of the FOIA by
virtue of s40 (3)(a)(i).
“Any information to which a request for information relates is also exempt
information if—
(a)it constitutes personal data which do not fall within subsection (1),
and (b)either the first or the second condition below is satisfied
The first condition is—
(a)in a case where the information falls within any of paragraphs (a) to
(d) of the definition of “data” in section 1(1) of the M1Data Protection
Act 1998, that the disclosure of the information to a member of the public
otherwise than under this Act would contravene—
(i)any of the data protection principles, (ii)section 10 of that Act
(right to prevent processing likely to cause damage or distress)”
In this case we believe that the requested information could relate to and
identify individuals and therefore would be personal data. The disclosure
of these personal data would not be within the reasonable expectations of
the individuals concerned and it would be unfair to do so; this therefore
breaches the first data protection principle.
Please note that we do not yet have the ethnicity data for all 2017
applicants and therefore cannot provide data for part 1 or part 10 for
2017.
You are free to use any information supplied for your own use, including
for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.
If you are unhappy with our response to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request a review of our decision, please email
