Information on Spin Out companies

The request was partially successful.

Dear Imperial College London,

I am writing to you with the hope that you will be able to answer my following questions about Spin Out companies.

1) How many scientific or engineering based start up companies and spin out companies have been created from your University each year for the last 5 years?

2) Of these companies, how many of them received private investment of over £100,000 within 1 year of starting up?

3) What is the typical % share of equity the University has taken in Spin Out companies each year for the last 5 years? Is this negotiable?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Ashley Monroe

Dear Mr Monroe

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request. Please find below the College's response to your questions.

1) How many scientific or engineering based start up companies and spin out companies have been created from your University each year for the last 5 years?

information on spinouts (startup companies based on College IP) can be found here: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/enterprise/re...

2) Of these companies, how many of them received private investment of over £100,000 within 1 year of starting up?

We do not record how many startups have received over £100k. We have a record of the total investment received - see Venture capital acquired by IP startups (£ million) line item in page linked to above.

3) What is the typical % share of equity the University has taken in Spin Out companies each year for the last 5 years? Is this negotiable?

The typical equity share varies, according to a programme called Founder's Choice.

If you go to the above link a click on "Founders Choice a Mini-guide" - on page 9 there is a helpful table.
