Information on NHS Trusts Meeting and Exceeding 80% Target

The request was successful.

Dear Department of Health and Social Care,

I am writing to make a formal request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for information held by the Department of Health and Social Care regarding the statement made by Health Minister Victoria Atkins during a BBC Breakfast interview on Thursday 11th April, 2024. Specifically, I am seeking the following information:

If it exists, the document, report, email, or correspondence within the Department of Health and Social Care possessed by the Health Minister Victoria Atkins which informed her of the NHS trusts meeting or exceeding an 80% target for healthcare services.

I am making this request in the public interest for the following reasons:

1. Transparency and Accountability: The public has a right to know how taxpayer-funded healthcare services are being managed and whether they are meeting government targets. Providing this information will enhance transparency and accountability within the Department of Health and Social Care.

2. Public Confidence: The statement made by the Health Minister regarding NHS trusts meeting and exceeding targets has raised questions about the performance of healthcare services. Releasing the names of the trusts meeting the 80% target will help build public confidence in the government's management of the NHS and its ability to deliver quality healthcare services.

3. Policy Evaluation: Access to this information will enable stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, patients, and policymakers, to evaluate the effectiveness of current healthcare policies and identify areas for improvement.

4. Media Scrutiny: The statement made by the Health Minister has attracted media attention, and providing the requested information will facilitate accurate reporting and informed public debate on healthcare issues.

I understand that under the Freedom of Information Act, you are required to respond to this request within 20 working days. If you require any clarification or further details to process this request, please do not hesitate to contact me via the email address provided.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to receiving the requested information at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Amanda Hart

The problems which the minister's response:

1. Lack of transparency: The minister refused to name the NHS trusts that were allegedly meeting or exceeding targets, raising questions about the credibility of the claim and the transparency of the government's handling of healthcare data.

2. Accountability: By failing to provide specific information about which trusts are performing well, the government avoids accountability for its promises to reduce waiting times and improve healthcare services.

3. Skepticism: The exchange between the journalist and the minister highlights skepticism about the government's management of the NHS and its ability to address the growing waiting list problem effectively.

4. Inadequate response: Instead of addressing the root causes of longer waiting times and providing concrete solutions, the minister's vague response undermines public confidence in the government's commitment to improving healthcare services.
