Dear Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council,
I would like to know the following;
• How many landfill sites does the council possess, both defunct and operating?
• How many landfill sites in the council’s jurisdiction are ran privately, and if so by whom?
• How many landfill sites, old or new, were operating before 1994?
• Are there any landfill sites that are currently at risk of coastal erosion, or are actively leaching into the sea?
Thanks for your time.
FOI request - Ref FOI/20/0551
I wish to acknowledge receipt of you request for information.
I have asked the relevant officers of the Authority to commence enquiries immediately to find all applicable information relating to your request under the FOI Act and to supply any which is found to you.
Your request has to be processed within a maximum of 20 working days, which means the Council must provide you with the information it has (assuming no exemptions are claimed) by 28/09/2020. If it is possible to provide you with the information within a shorter timescale then that will be done.
Please be aware that there may be a delay in responding to your FOI request at this current time. Many services and resources will be keeping our essential frontline services running, which may have a knock on effect in responding within the statutory timeline. Thank you for your understanding at this very difficult time and stay safe.
Should you have any queries about this matter please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Dear Information Security,
The timescale for responding to the FOI I requested has now passed.

o Is the information required for pre- Control of Pollution Act 1974 or
whether it is for pre 1994
It has been advised that the Council's GIS layers comprise of an historic
layer showing 83 landfill/raises and a 10K layer showing 145 sites,
however, there are overlaps within the data so the total number would have

It has also been advised that the Council may not hold the information to
private landfill sites and the Environment Agency may have this
As of yet, I do not have a time period for a response until
clarification. Once this I can ask for a timescale.
Thank you for your patience and I will try and get this information to you
asap once clarification has been returned.
Alternatively, as your Freedom of information request is late, you are
free to make a complaint either to the Council or to the Information
Commissioner regarding the handling of this.
Dear Information Security,
With regards to your questions, it is the historic landfill sites primarily that I would like the information for, and pre 1994 landfill sites, as the aim of this EOI was to see how many old landfill sites there are in the area that are likely unprotected.
Are any of these landfill sites close to waterways or have potential to leach their contents into waterways?
Please find our response to your request, please accept our apologies for
