Information on how charities use NHS data regarding terminally ill patients and their families
Dear Charity Commission for England and Wales,
I would like to request information and clarification on exactly how charities (such as Marie Curie, Salvation Army, St Johns Ambulance and Cats Protection, among others) obtain personal information regarding NHS registered terminally ill patients and their families, without either the patient or the family members having previously donated or given their information the charities. It is my understanding that a charity can and should only contact an individual (with a personalised envelope) if that individual has willingly provided their personal details to that charity. I believe certain charities are specifically targeting family members of a terminally ill patient to try and coerce them into donating when they are in a deeply emotionally vulnerable state, without ever having previously provided the charity with their information.
Please provide documentation of policy showing where charities receive data about terminally ill patients and their family members from.
Yours faithfully,
Miss Bennett
