SecOInformation Governance, University of Bristol

Dear Thalia,

Freedom of Information Request (our reference FOI24333)

We refer to your Freedom of Information request dated the 26th of July.

You requested the following information:

1. The percentage of home undergraduate students admitted in the 2023
entry admissions cycle who were from an independent/private school.

2. The percentage of home undergraduate students admitted in the 2023
entry admissions cycle who were from a grammar school.

3. The percentage of home undergraduate students admitted in the 2023
entry admissions cycle who were from a non-selective state school.

University’s Response

Further to Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the “Act”) we
confirm that the information requested is partially held by the University
of Bristol (the “University”).

Please see the University's response below. Please note that the
University does not record "grammar school" as a specific category, and as
such data for Q2 is not held.

Please also note that, with regard to Q3, the data held for state schools
does not differentiate between selective and non-selective institutions,
so this level of granularity of data is not available. As such, the data
provided for Q3 is for all state schools.

Question 1
Independent and Other independent School 1439
Question 3
State School 5370

Notes

All totals are rounded to the nearest
multiple of 5
Numbers shown are from standard applications
i.e. do not include clearing offers
"Admitted" has been interpreted as accepting
their offer.
Admissions Cycles correspond to those used
by UCAS, referring to each approaching year
of entry, though counts can include deferred
applications
The above table works on admissions cycle
and not entry year. Therefore, deferred
applicants are counted in the academic year
they applied in and not the academic year
they started the programme.
School type data does not include exact
matches for the categories in the questions.
For Q1, we have used any non-state
"Independent" or "Other independent" school.
We cannot provide data for Q2, as we do not
have a category for grammar schools in the
school type data.
Q3 we have provided data for any state
school, as the school data does not
differentiate between selective and
non-selective state schools.
