Subject: Freedom of Information request - Information and documents
relating to staff wellbeing in higher education

Dear Harper Adams University,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act
2000. I would be interested in any information held by your organisation
regarding my request on staff wellbeing in Higher Education (HE).

I would like to request the following information, covering the last 12
months:

1. The job title of the senior manager with lead responsibility for staff
wellbeing in the University.

Head of Human Resources

2. The number of mental health specialist staff available within the
university to support staff wellbeing.

The University does not employ mental health specialist staff to support
staff wellbeing. Where support is needed, this is accessed through third
parties including the Telford Occupational Health Service.  Although not
specialists, we do have 15 staff across the institution who are trained
Mental Health First Aiders.

3. A copy of the University’s Policy (procedures)/other relevant
document(s) to support the wellbeing of staff.

The University has a Managing Sickness Absence Policy, which clearly
states that the University is committed to improving the health,
well-being and attendance of all employees and values the contribution its
employees makes to its success.

The provision of wellbeing support itself is not covered by an existing
standalone policy, but one is in development.

The staff wellbeing services offered to staff are;

·         Cycle2Work Scheme

·         Access to on-campus sports facilities and activities

·         Referrals to a third party provider of face-to-face counselling
services

·         Occupational Health

·         Mental Health First Aiders

·         Chaplaincy

·         Family friendly employment policies

·         Flexible working arrangements

·         Management training in mental wellbeing

The University is currently exploring the introduction of an Employee
Assistance Programme (EAP).

5. The number of referrals to services offered where staff wellbeing was a
primary reason for the referral

During the last 12 months, 13 employees have accessed a third party
provider for support, advice and/or counselling,  11 of which were
self-referrals.

6. Staff take up (number) by each service offered to support staff
wellbeing.

For the following services, data is not held or uptake is not measurable;

·         Access to on-campus sports facilities and activities

·         Mental Health First Aiders (We have 15 qualified MHFA, but do
not record data on the support they provide)

·         Chaplaincy

·         Family friendly employment policies

·         Flexible working arrangements

·         Occupational Health (Some referrals are made, but this does not
always result in uptake)

In the last 12 months the number of employees accessing these services is;

·         Cycle2Work Scheme (1 new uptake, data not available on ongoing
usage)

·         Management training in mental wellbeing (20)

·         As noted above, self- referrals/referrals by the University to a
third party provider of face-to-face support, advice and/or counselling
services (13)

Please provide the above information in the form of electronic files.

If it is not possible to provide the information required due to the
information exceeding the cost of compliance limits identified in section
12, please provide assistance under section 16, obligation of the Act, as
to how I can refine my request.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to receiving the above
information.

Yours faithfully,

Vida Douglas
