Information about your dealings with Stonewall [Extraneous material removed]

Judith Berridge made this Freedom of Information request to Manchester Metropolitan University

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Manchester Metropolitan University,

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). Please provide any information that you hold answering to any of the following descriptions:

1. Any application you made in 2019 or 2020 to be a “Stonewall Diversity Champion” or to be included on Stonewall’s “Workplace Equality Index,” including any attachments or appendices to those applications. Please redact personal details if necessary.

2. Any feedback you received in 2019 or 2020 from Stonewall in relation to either application or programme.

3. Any other communication you have received from Stonewall in 2019 or 2020 unless privileged or otherwise exempt from disclosure (but if you claim privilege or exemption in relation to any material, please say in broad terms what the material is and the basis on which you claim to be entitled to withhold it).

4. Full details of any equality impact assessment you carried out connected with any of these applications (including any equality impact assessment carried out prior to an earlier application of the same kind, if no further assessment was done).

5. Details of the total amount of money you paid to Stonewall (i) in 2019; (ii) in 2020, whether or not as payment for goods or services.

6. Whether you intend to continue your membership of any Stonewall scheme in the future, and if so which.

Yours faithfully,

Judith Berridge

Dear Ms Berridge

Apologies for the slight delay in responding to your request.  The
University’s usual working arrangements have been subject to some
disruption during the pandemic which has caused minor delays at times.

Please find below the information held by the University currently in the
categories you have requested.  Please note, however, that we are unable
to identify all potentially relevant data within the cost limit for
complying with a request under the Freedom of Information Act, because the
scope of your request is so broad.  For example, ‘any other communication
you have received (from Stonewall)’ over a 2 year period, could include
any communication to any member of the University and we have several
thousand employees/staff and over 30,000 students registered each year.
The cost limit is 18 hours/£450 under the Appropriate Limits & Fees
Regulations 2004.  Under s12 of the Act, the University is under no
obligation to comply with your request.

Furthermore, the ICO guidance warns against ‘fishing’ for information by
submitting very broad requests and/or sending ‘catch all’ requests for all
information held about something, as such requests may also be considered
as vexatious under s14 of the Act.  However, you may find the following
information and guidance of assistance:

1. Any application you made in 2019 or 2020 to be a “Stonewall Diversity
Champion” or to be included on Stonewall’s “Workplace Equality Index,”
including any attachments or appendices to those applications. Please
redact personal details if necessary.

The University did not submit an application through the Stonewall
Workplace Equality Index in 2019 or 2020.

The University had maintained its registration as a Stonewall Diversity
Champion across 2019 and 2020. Application for this scheme was made via an
online form and the University does not have a copy of this submission.

2. Any feedback you received in 2019 or 2020 from Stonewall in relation to
either application or programme.

This is not applicable for the Workplace Equality Index as the University
did not submit applications in 2019 and 2020. No feedback is held by the
University in relation to the Stonewall Diversity Champion scheme.

3. Any other communication you have received from Stonewall in 2019 or
2020 unless privileged or otherwise exempt from disclosure (but if you
claim privilege or exemption in relation to any material, please say in
broad terms what the material is and the basis on which you claim to be
entitled to withhold it).

The University’s main contact with Stonewall in 2019 and 2020 has since
left the organisation. No record of communication between that individual
and Stonewall is held centrally by the University.  Other individuals may
well have exchanged communications with Stonewall, including registering
for Stonewall newsletters, however this would not be recorded centrally by
the University.  Furthermore, identifying which employees register for
Stonewall newsletters as part of the search process may be considered to
be an unwarranted invasion of their privacy and rights.

4. Full details of any equality impact assessment you carried out
connected with any of these applications (including any equality impact
assessment carried out prior to an earlier application of the same kind,
if no further assessment was done).

No information in this category is held by the University at this time: no
such assessment was undertaken.

5. Details of the total amount of money you paid to Stonewall (i) in 2019;
(ii) in 2020, whether or not as payment for goods or services.

2020: £3000

2019: £4914

6. Whether you intend to continue your membership of any Stonewall scheme
in the future, and if so which.

No information in this category is held by the University at this time: we
have no agreed (documented) position as a University in relation to future
Stonewall membership.

If you are dissatisfied with this response and wish to appeal our
decision, please write to [1][Manchester Metropolitan University request email] giving your reasons for
appealing.  You must appeal within 40 working days of the date of this
email.  Under s5.3 of the Freedom of Information Act Code of Practice, we
are not obliged to accept appeals/internal reviews after this date.  You
also have a subsequent right of appeal to the Information Commissioner’s
Office (ICO), see their website at: [2]https://ico.org.uk for more
information.
