Information about the council's gritting policy

The authority would like to / has responded by postal mail to this request.

Dear Birmingham City Council,

During the recent cold weather in the United Kingdom, many roads and pavements in Birmingham were either not gritted or only partially gritted. Many councils have been criticised for failing to procure sufficient quantities of grit to properly maintain roads and pavements during this period.

Birmingham City Council makes public its policy on roads to be gritted, but does not do so on pavements. Does a plan for city pavement gritting exist and, if so, could it be provided?

Is there a specific policy governing the gritting of pavements and could this be made available as well?

How much does Birmingham City Council spend each year to grit its roads and - if pertinent - how much more was spent as a result of the cold weather between December 1 2009 and 31 January 2010?

Could you make available any correspondence between Birmingham City Council and central government, from December 1 2009 to January 31 2010, concerning the availability and or procurement of grit/rock salt for the roads and pavements?

Could you make available any correspondence within Birmingham City Council, from December 1 2009 to January 31 2010, concerning the availability and or procurement of grit/rock salt as a result of the cold weather?

Could you make available any correspondence within Birmingham City Council, from to December 1 2009 to January 31 2010, concerning the distribution of grit/rock salt as a result of the cold weather?

Yours faithfully,

Andrew Brightwell

This request was made in light of concern over the gritting of roads and pavements after the very cold snap the UK experienced in late December and early January.
